Chapter Four : Chapter Four looks at events during 1964, including the<br />

"<strong>Freedom</strong> Summer" campaign in Mississippi . Debate within SNCC <strong>an</strong>d CORE on<br />

the issue <strong>of</strong> armed resist<strong>an</strong>ce is be discussed in this chapter. This chapter will take<br />

a special look at various communities in Mississippi <strong>an</strong>d how they utilized the<br />

armed resist<strong>an</strong>ce tradition to respond to the increase in white supremacist violence<br />

in 1964 .<br />

tions, primarily to support boycotts in Mississippi will be explored . <strong>The</strong> leader-<br />

ship <strong>of</strong> two NAACP activists, Charles Evers <strong>an</strong>d Rudy Shields, <strong>an</strong>d the develop<br />

ment <strong>of</strong> the Deacons <strong>for</strong> Defense <strong>an</strong>d Justice in Louisi<strong>an</strong>a as key factors in org<strong>an</strong>i-<br />

zation <strong>of</strong> para-military groups in the state. Conclusion : <strong>The</strong> conclusion <strong>of</strong> "<strong>Eye</strong><br />

<strong>for</strong> <strong>an</strong> <strong>Eye</strong>" attempts to identify what signific<strong>an</strong>ce this study has on scholarship<br />

related to the Civil Rights Movement <strong>an</strong>d southern Black culture .<br />

Expl<strong>an</strong>ation <strong>an</strong>d Definition <strong>of</strong> Basic Concepts<br />
