In Claiborne <strong>an</strong>d Copiah counties, local communities established local<br />

Deacon chapters that were more autonomous from the Natchez group . When<br />

NAACP led boycotts developed in Claiborne County <strong>an</strong>d in the towns <strong>of</strong><br />

Hazelhurst <strong>an</strong>d Crystal Springs in Copiah County, these respective communities<br />

org<strong>an</strong>ized local chapters <strong>of</strong> the Mississippi Deacons <strong>of</strong> Defense <strong>an</strong>d Justice . In all<br />

<strong>of</strong> these communities, the Deacons <strong>an</strong>d en<strong>for</strong>cer squads were org<strong>an</strong>ized as part <strong>of</strong><br />

boycott campaigns to pressure the white power structure to concede to dem<strong>an</strong>ds<br />

similar to those presented by Black leaders in Natchez.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Claiborne County Deacons <strong>for</strong> Defense <strong>an</strong>d Justice was among the<br />

most well org<strong>an</strong>ized <strong>an</strong>d effective paramilitary org<strong>an</strong>ization in the state. In 1960,<br />

Claiborne County had a population <strong>of</strong> 11,000, with 8,239 (76 percent) <strong>of</strong> its<br />

residents <strong>of</strong> Afric<strong>an</strong> descent . During the same year, Claiborne's county seat, Port<br />

Gibson had a population <strong>of</strong> 2816 . <strong>The</strong> population <strong>of</strong> Port Gibson was almost<br />

evenly divided between Afric<strong>an</strong> descend<strong>an</strong>ts <strong>an</strong>d whites . <strong>The</strong>re were no Black<br />

elected or appointed <strong>of</strong>ficials in the county. In 1966, prior to the initiation <strong>of</strong> the<br />

NAACP boycott <strong>of</strong> white merch<strong>an</strong>ts in Port Gibson, there were only seven Black<br />

registered voters in the whole county. Claiborne County is also the home <strong>of</strong><br />

Alcorn A&M, Mississippi fast public Black college .'°<br />

<strong>The</strong> Deacons <strong>for</strong> Defense <strong>an</strong>d the en<strong>for</strong>cer squads, now known as "Da<br />

Spirit," were org<strong>an</strong>ized in Claiborne County after the Black community under the<br />

leadership <strong>of</strong> Evers <strong>an</strong>d the local NAACP called a boycott on April l, 1966 . <strong>The</strong><br />

Deacons were org<strong>an</strong>ized after Rudy Shields arr<strong>an</strong>ged a meeting between James<br />

Stokes, State Spokesm<strong>an</strong> <strong>for</strong> the Mississippi Deacons <strong>for</strong> Defense <strong>an</strong>d Justice,
