groups respond in violent rage directed at those who they feel are responsible <strong>for</strong><br />

their pain <strong>an</strong>d oppression . While spont<strong>an</strong>eous rebellions may begin as unpl<strong>an</strong>ned<br />

events, their particip<strong>an</strong>ts have political intent <strong>an</strong>d are responded to politically by<br />

insurgent leaders <strong>an</strong>d by elites . In some cases Movement leaders, while not the<br />

initiators <strong>of</strong> the revolt, <strong>of</strong>fer to calm the rebellion in exch<strong>an</strong>ge <strong>for</strong> re<strong>for</strong>ms . Elites<br />

while applying repression, in m<strong>an</strong>y cases are more willing to <strong>of</strong>fer concessions to<br />

quell the violence <strong>of</strong> spont<strong>an</strong>eous rebels . Given its political nature <strong>an</strong>d its utility<br />

<strong>for</strong> social ch<strong>an</strong>ge, spont<strong>an</strong>eous rebellion must considered <strong>an</strong> aspect <strong>of</strong> the armed<br />

resist<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> the Black freedom movement .<br />

Terrorism is the use <strong>of</strong> <strong>for</strong>ce to intimidate civili<strong>an</strong>s . Of course, we recog-<br />

nize terrorism from the domin<strong>an</strong>t powers, <strong>for</strong> it was essential to the survival <strong>of</strong><br />

white supremacy . But a from <strong>of</strong> terrorism was used in Mississippi by Movement<br />

,leaders to coerce Black residents to comply with economic boycotts . While it<br />

might not be popular to mention terrorism, it served as <strong>an</strong> import<strong>an</strong>t aspect <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Mississippi freedom movement. While some question the morality <strong>of</strong> terrorism<br />

being included in the armed resist<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> the freedom movement, Others may feel<br />

that the violent en<strong>for</strong>cement <strong>of</strong> economic boycotts may not count as armed resis-<br />

t<strong>an</strong>ce since this <strong>for</strong>m <strong>of</strong> terrorism was <strong>of</strong>ten directed at other Blacks . Since the<br />

violent en<strong>for</strong>cement <strong>of</strong> economic boycotts was viewed by Movement particip<strong>an</strong>ts<br />

as a me<strong>an</strong>s to compliment ef<strong>for</strong>ts to achieve Black civil <strong>an</strong>d hum<strong>an</strong> rights, it must<br />

be considered <strong>an</strong> aspect <strong>of</strong> the armed resist<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> the Mississippi freedom move-<br />

ment.
