also considered armed self-defense . Generally Mississippi Blacks utilized armed<br />

self-defense as a compliment to non-violent direct action, voter registration<br />

campaigns <strong>an</strong>d economic boycotts . Black armed self-defense was considered<br />

insurgent violence in the South since it was <strong>of</strong>ten utilized to defend the lives,<br />

institutions, <strong>an</strong>d property <strong>of</strong> a subject community <strong>an</strong>d their activists ef<strong>for</strong>ts to<br />

challenge the authority <strong>an</strong>d mores <strong>of</strong> the (local) ruling group .<br />

<strong>Armed</strong> self-defense was the most pervasive <strong>for</strong>m <strong>of</strong> the armed resist<strong>an</strong>ce<br />

practiced in the Movement <strong>an</strong>d in Black communities in the South in the 1950's<br />

<strong>an</strong>d 1960's . To only speak <strong>of</strong> armed self-defense, however, denies that other <strong>for</strong>ms<br />

<strong>of</strong> insurgent violence were import<strong>an</strong>t tools <strong>of</strong> local Movements <strong>an</strong>d communities .<br />

Also that were utilized in the Southern freedom movements were retaliatory<br />

violence, spont<strong>an</strong>eous rebellion <strong>an</strong>d terrorism . Retaliatory violence is the orga-<br />

nized use <strong>of</strong> <strong>for</strong>ce to avenge <strong>an</strong> act <strong>of</strong> abuse, particularly, <strong>an</strong> act <strong>of</strong> violence .<br />

Retaliatory violence was <strong>of</strong>ten utilized to respond to white supremacist violence<br />

<strong>an</strong>d abuse . On several occasions, Blacks would respond, or threaten to counter,<br />

with violence to return white violence . Since retaliatory violence goes beyond<br />

protection <strong>of</strong> the lives, institutions <strong>an</strong>d property to <strong>an</strong> actual (counter) <strong>of</strong>fensive<br />

attack, it must be distinguished from armed self-defense . In some cases terrorism<br />

was utilized .<br />

"Spont<strong>an</strong>eous rebellion" is <strong>an</strong> unpl<strong>an</strong>ned violent response by <strong>an</strong> ag-<br />

grieved group or community after <strong>an</strong> act <strong>of</strong> abuse by the domin<strong>an</strong>t group or its<br />

agents . <strong>The</strong>se acts are <strong>of</strong>ten called riots in scholarship <strong>an</strong>d mass media. <strong>The</strong> term<br />

"riot" <strong>of</strong>ten diminishes the intentionality <strong>of</strong> the rebellious group or community .<br />

No matter how unorg<strong>an</strong>ized, spont<strong>an</strong>eous rebellions <strong>of</strong>ten reflect a "hidden
