The major in communication prepares graduates to meet today’s<br />
ever-growing demand for skilled communicators who have specialized<br />
backgrounds in business, science or technology. Course<br />
work emphasizing either business, or science and engineering<br />
augments a strong foundation in theoretical communication, in<br />
visual communication, and in written and oral communication.<br />
Graduates <strong>of</strong> this program are able to plan, research, write, edit<br />
and design reports, strategic plans, proposals, articles, brochures<br />
and other kinds <strong>of</strong> communication for both print and electronic<br />
delivery. Additionally, students learn to create and deliver effective<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional presentations.<br />
Graduates specializing in business and marketing communication<br />
typically find employment in public relations, marketing,<br />
publications research, advertising, copywriting, editing, training<br />
and development, public information or customer relations.<br />
Graduates specializing in scientific and technical communication<br />
are typically employed as technical or scientific writers and editors,<br />
documentation designers, technical publications specialists,<br />
instructional designers, Web site designers or proposal writers.<br />
Degree Requirements<br />
Candidates for the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science in Communication<br />
require a total <strong>of</strong> 121 credit hours for graduation. On reaching<br />
the junior year, candidates must choose an area <strong>of</strong> concentration<br />
and include 21 credit hours <strong>of</strong> specialized course work. A senior<br />
with a GPA over 3.25 may apply for a six-semester-hour communication<br />
internship that reflects the area <strong>of</strong> concentration. The<br />
composition <strong>of</strong> the 121-credit program must correspond to the<br />
following distribution <strong>of</strong> required and elective courses.<br />
