PSYCHOLOGY<br />

PSY 1400 FRESHMAN SEMINAR (1 credit). Offers discussions by members <strong>of</strong><br />

the faculty about various areas <strong>of</strong> research in and practice <strong>of</strong> psychology to give freshmen<br />

an overview <strong>of</strong> the nature <strong>of</strong> the field and the people in it. (Requirement: Must<br />

be enrolled in the School <strong>of</strong> Psychology.)<br />

PSY 1411 INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Overviews psychological<br />

processes, including both areas in which psychology is a natural science<br />

(physiological psychology, sensation and perception, basic learning and cognition)<br />

and a social science (motivation, human development, personality, social interaction,<br />

psychopathology and psychotherapy). (SS)<br />

PSY 1461 PSYCHOLOGY OF ADJUSTMENT AND PERSONAL<br />

GROWTH (3 credits). Examines the relevance <strong>of</strong> psychological understanding in<br />

personal and interpersonal situations, including definitions and discussions <strong>of</strong> human<br />

adjustment factors, such as anxiety, stress, coping mechanisms and psychological<br />

adaptation. (SS)<br />

PSY 1462 SUBSTANCE ABUSE (3 credits). Examines experimental evidence<br />

on the physical, physiological and psychological effects <strong>of</strong> drug use and conclusions<br />

relating to the real vs. alleged effects <strong>of</strong> drugs. (SS)<br />

PSY 1463 HUMAN SEXUALITY (3 credits). Integrates and presents biological,<br />

psychosocial and cultural aspects <strong>of</strong> human sexuality within the context <strong>of</strong> the most<br />

recent research findings. (SS)<br />

PSY 2413 RESEARCH EXPERIENCE (1 credit). Offers research experience<br />

under the direction <strong>of</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> the psychology faculty, generally in the context<br />

<strong>of</strong> programmatic research teams. May be repeated for a maximum <strong>of</strong> three credits.<br />

Prerequisites: PSY 1411.<br />

PSY 2442 ADULT DEVELOPMENT AND AGING (3 credits). Introduces<br />

current information and psychological research on aspects <strong>of</strong> adult development,<br />

old age and aging. Examines the intellectual, motivational, psychobiological, social,<br />

performance and personality changes that occur in adulthood and old age. (SS)<br />

Prerequisites: PSY 1411.<br />

PSY 2443 PSYCHOLOGY OF EDUCATION (3 credits). Presents psychological<br />

perspectives on educational philosophies and practices. Reviews theories developed<br />

by psychologists with respect to their application to educational processes<br />

and their applicability to enhancing the teacher-learning process. (SS) Prerequisites:<br />

PSY 1411.<br />

PSY 2444 CROSS-CULTURAL AND ETHNIC PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits).<br />

Examines the relationship between cultural variables and psychological processes<br />

from both a psychological and an anthropological perspective. Addresses cultural,<br />

international and ethnic issues. (SS) Prerequisites: PSY 1411.<br />

PSY 2445 PSYCHOLOGY OF WOMEN (3 credits). Examines the way gender<br />

differences affect the lives <strong>of</strong> women. Studies biological, cultural and social factors in<br />

terms <strong>of</strong> their direct effects on women, and in terms <strong>of</strong> the psychological and cultural<br />

bases <strong>of</strong> prejudice and discrimination. (SS) Prerequisites: PSY 1411.<br />

PSY 2446 SPORT PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Surveys the theory, research and<br />

applications <strong>of</strong> psychology pertaining to exercise and sports. Presents current topics<br />

and issues relevant to sport psychology. (SS) Prerequisites: PSY 1411.<br />

PSY 2511 INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH METHODS FOR PSY-<br />

CHOLOGY (3 credits). Introduces basic research concepts and methods in psychological<br />

research including research design, validity, measurement, data analysis<br />

and interpretation. Teaches skills required for research and term paper preparation<br />

including use <strong>of</strong> s<strong>of</strong>tware, writing in APA format and presentation <strong>of</strong> results (CL)<br />

Prerequisites: PSY 1400, PSY 1411.<br />

PSY 2541 GROUP BEHAVIOR (3 credits). Considers issues <strong>of</strong> group development,<br />

socialization, productivity, decision making and leadership. Emphasizes the<br />

application <strong>of</strong> scientific theory and research to the study <strong>of</strong> group dynamics in real<br />

world group situations. Includes cult and crowd phenomena, social loafing, group<br />

therapy, work groups and sports teams. (SS) Prerequisites: PSY 1411.<br />

PSY 3400 JUNIOR SEMINAR (1 credit). Offers discussions by members <strong>of</strong> the<br />

faculty about new developments in psychology and career opportunities in the field.<br />

(Requirement: Junior standing in psychology.)<br />

PSY 3413 SPECIAL TOPICS IN PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Topics <strong>of</strong> special<br />

interest when student interest and staffing permit. May be repeated for a maximum<br />

<strong>of</strong> six credits, provided the topics change. Prerequisites: PSY 1411.<br />

PSY 3414 SPECIAL TOPICS IN PSYCHOLOGY (1 credit). Topics <strong>of</strong> special<br />

interest when student interest and staffing permit. May be repeated for a maximum<br />

<strong>of</strong> two credits, provided the topics change. Prerequisites: PSY 1411.<br />

PSY 3421 PSYCHOLOGY OF LEARNING AND MOTIVATION (3 credits).<br />

Studies the principles <strong>of</strong> learning and motivation based primarily on infrahuman<br />

studies in classical and instrumental conditioning. Focuses on procedures, theories<br />

and applications. (SS) Prerequisites: PSY 1411.<br />

PSY 3423 PHYSIOLOGICAL PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Studies the biological<br />

bases <strong>of</strong> human behavior, including in-depth treatment <strong>of</strong> nervous system<br />

anatomy and physiology, and the biological concepts underlying emotion, motivation,<br />

learning and memory. Prerequisites: BIO 1020 or EDS 1032, PSY 1411.<br />

PSY 3441 SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Surveys the areas <strong>of</strong> social<br />

psychology as it has evolved in American psychology, including its history, methods<br />

and theories <strong>of</strong> intrapersonal, interpersonal and group behavior. Reviews sociological<br />

approaches to social psychology and cultural processes that affect social phenomena.<br />

(SS) Prerequisites: PSY 1411.<br />

PSY 3442 PSYCHOLOGY OF PERSONALITY (3 credits). Overviews the<br />

major theoretical approaches to personality development and research in the field.<br />

(SS) Prerequisites: PSY 1411.<br />

PSY 3511 ADVANCED RESEARCH METHODS FOR PSYCHOLOGY<br />

(3 credits). A lecture and laboratory class that emphasizes performing and reporting<br />

empirical research including conceptualization and design <strong>of</strong> studies, research procedures,<br />

data analysis using pr<strong>of</strong>essional s<strong>of</strong>tware tools, report writing in APA format,<br />

and presentation <strong>of</strong> results. Prerequisites: BUS 2703 or MTH 2401, PSY 2511.<br />

PSY 3512 INTERVIEWING AND ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES (3 credits).<br />

Theory, application and interpretation <strong>of</strong> interviewing and objective testing methods<br />

used in clinical, industrial and forensic settings. Overviews measurement theory as<br />

the basis for objective testing. Prerequisites: BUS 2703, PSY 2511.<br />

PSY 3522 HUMAN COGNITION: THEORY AND APPLICATION (3 credits).<br />

Reviews models, processes and research in information processing; attention,<br />

short- and long-term memory, memory codes, visualization and imagery; forgetting,<br />

semantic organization, problem solving, decision-making, language, multilingualism,<br />

music cognition and cognitive development. Prerequisites: PSY 2511.<br />

PSY 3524 SENSATION AND PERCEPTION (3 credits). Reviews models,<br />

processes and empirical research concerning the modalities <strong>of</strong> vision, audition, taste,<br />

smell and touch/feel. Explores how perception gives rise to our subjective experience<br />

and the quality <strong>of</strong> conscious awareness. Prerequisites: PSY 2511.<br />

PSY 3531 CHILD PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Overviews psychological principles,<br />

theories and research pertaining to the developing child from conception<br />

through early adolescence. Includes biological and environmental influences on<br />

affective, cognitive, moral, social and personality development. (SS) Prerequisites:<br />

PSY 1411.<br />

PSY 3541 PSYCHOLOGY OF LEADERSHIP (3 credits). Examines the<br />

research and application <strong>of</strong> the essential competencies <strong>of</strong> effective leadership such<br />

as managing conflict, facilitating communication and leading groups and teams.<br />

Prerequisites: PSY 1411.<br />

PSY 3542 SURVEY OF INDUSTRIAL/ORGANIZATION PSYCHOLOGY<br />

(3 credits). Surveys the application <strong>of</strong> psychological principles and methods to work.<br />

Includes employee selection, motivation, performance and behavior; the structure<br />

and function <strong>of</strong> occupational positions and activities; and the nature, processes and<br />

development <strong>of</strong> organizations. (SS) Prerequisites: BUS 2703, PSY 2511.<br />

PSY 4400 SENIOR SEMINAR (1 credit). Readings from primary sources within<br />

a topical area determined by the seminar leader. Students gain familiarity with the<br />

research and/or theoretical base <strong>of</strong> an area <strong>of</strong> psychology and with the procedures <strong>of</strong><br />

the American academic seminar. (Requirement: Psychology major with at least 12<br />

credits <strong>of</strong> PSY courses completed.)<br />

PSY 4411 INTERNSHIP (3 credits). Offers 15-week field placement under<br />

supervision to provide students with an opportunity for direct experience in an<br />

area <strong>of</strong> applied psychology. May be repeated for a maximum <strong>of</strong> six credits, provided<br />

internship sites change. (Requirement: Senior standing.)<br />

PSY 4413 UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH (3 credits). Offers research experience<br />

under the direction <strong>of</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> the psychology faculty. May be repeated<br />

for a maximum <strong>of</strong> six credits. (Requirement: Instructor approval.) Prerequisites:<br />

PSY 3511.<br />

PSY 4461 ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Examines psychological<br />

disorders, including theories <strong>of</strong> their development, symptomology and systems <strong>of</strong><br />

classification. (SS) Prerequisites: PSY 3442.<br />

PSY 4462 CLINICAL AND COMMUNITY PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits).<br />

Overviews clinical psychology and community psychology. Reviews methods <strong>of</strong><br />

clinical assessment and treatment <strong>of</strong> behavioral disorders. Presents the concepts <strong>of</strong><br />

community psychology as they have developed from the fields <strong>of</strong> psychology, social<br />

work and public administration. (SS) Prerequisites: PSY 4461.<br />

PSY 4465 INTRODUCTION TO APPLIED BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS (4 credits).<br />

Applies operant and respondent conditioning processes to the modification <strong>of</strong> human<br />

behavior in business, community, education and clinical settings. Includes analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

situational components, measurement <strong>of</strong> behavior, application <strong>of</strong> behavior change techniques<br />

and understanding the significance <strong>of</strong> results. Prerequisites: PSY 3421.<br />

PSY 4466 BEHAVIOR TRAINING TECHNIQUES IN CLINICAL AND<br />

EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS (3 credits). Applies operant and respondent<br />

conditioning processes and skill training to the modification <strong>of</strong> patient behavior in<br />

residential treatment and school settings. Includes analysis <strong>of</strong> the situational components,<br />

measurement <strong>of</strong> behavior, and application <strong>of</strong> behavior change techniques.<br />

Prerequisites: PSY 4465.
