Curriculum (both programs)<br />

Core Courses<br />

Core courses are required <strong>of</strong> a student whose undergraduate<br />

major is outside the business area or who has not previously completed<br />

courses in these core areas. The exact number <strong>of</strong> needed<br />

core courses depends on courses previously completed by the<br />

student. One or more <strong>of</strong> the core courses may be waived, subject<br />

to transcript review.<br />

The following core courses are designed to better prepare a<br />

student for M.B.A. required courses:<br />

BUS 5400 Legal, Ethical and Social Environment <strong>of</strong> Business<br />

BUS 5410 Quantitative Methods for Business Decisions<br />

BUS 5420 Macroeconomics<br />

BUS 5430 Financial Accounting<br />

Required Courses<br />

The M.B.A. degree requires completion <strong>of</strong> a common set <strong>of</strong> nine<br />

required courses as shown below. These required courses are<br />

designed to prepare the student to respond to the complex business<br />

decisions that arise in today’s rapidly changing environment.<br />

The student must complete the core requirements, if any, before<br />

registering for required courses or electives.<br />

Elective Courses<br />

In addition to the nine required courses, students are also<br />

required to take three elective courses. Electives can be taken<br />

with the faculty adviser’s approval from other graduate-level<br />

<strong>of</strong>ferings in the College <strong>of</strong> Business or other colleges or academic<br />

units.<br />

Thesis Track<br />

A thesis track exists for students with a strong business administration<br />

background. A maximum <strong>of</strong> six credit hours <strong>of</strong> thesis<br />

work, depending on the particular subject, may be taken in place<br />

<strong>of</strong> elective course work. The choice <strong>of</strong> thesis subject and the<br />

amount <strong>of</strong> thesis credit to be taken must be approved in advance<br />

by the student’s adviser.<br />

Accounting Track<br />

Students with the required accounting prerequisites may elect<br />

to take the accounting track by completing four courses from<br />

the following list. These courses will substitute for Managerial<br />

Accounting (BUS 5431) and the three M.B.A. electives.<br />

BUS 5433 Advanced Problems and Current Topics<br />

BUS 5434 Advanced Auditing Theory and Application<br />

BUS 5435 Tax and Financial Accounting Research<br />

BUS 5436 Government and Nonpr<strong>of</strong>it Accounting<br />

Managing Information <strong>Technology</strong> Track<br />

Students may elect to take the managing information technology<br />

track by completing three <strong>of</strong> the following courses as their<br />

M.B.A. electives.<br />

BUS 5465 Managing Information<br />

BUS 5466 Managing Systems<br />

BUS 5467 Managing Electronic Commerce<br />

Other 5000-level technology-related courses may be added to the<br />

list <strong>of</strong> electives with the approval <strong>of</strong> the student’s adviser.<br />

Entrepreneurship Track<br />

The entrepreneurship track is designed for students seeking<br />

advanced knowledge and skills in starting new businesses and<br />

growing existing companies. The track consists <strong>of</strong> four courses:<br />

BUS 5447 Entrepreneurial Finance (required)<br />

BUS 5487 Venture Development<br />

(substituted for BUS 5480 Strategic Management)<br />

Plus two electives from the following:<br />

BUS 5456 Employment Law<br />

BUS 5457 Negotiation and Conflict Resolution<br />

BUS 5467 Managing Electronic Commerce<br />

BUS 5488 Corporate Innovation and New Ventures<br />

ENM 5320 Topics in Technical Marketing<br />

ENM 5360 Product Development and <strong>Technology</strong><br />

Graduate Certificate in Executive Leadership<br />

The graduate certificate in executive leadership is a four-course<br />

mini-E.M.B.A. program that gives managers and executives the<br />

skills necessary to expand their areas <strong>of</strong> responsibility and/or<br />

move into positions <strong>of</strong> strategic leadership. The 18-week program<br />

draws courses from the formal E.M.B.A. program including<br />

Leading in the <strong>Technology</strong>-oriented Enterprise (BUS 5858),<br />

Financial Management Policy (BUS 5840), Global Marketing<br />

Management (BUS 5870) and Strategic Management in<br />

<strong>Technology</strong> Businesses (BUS 5880), or courses designed to build<br />

on students’ backgrounds. Students who complete the certificate<br />

can choose to continue in the E.M.B.A. program; three <strong>of</strong> the<br />

four courses can be transferred toward the E.M.B.A. degree.
