PSY 5431 WORK MOTIVATION (3 credits). Focuses on major theoretical issues<br />

and applications related to motivation in organizations. (Requirement: Department<br />

head approval.)<br />

PSY 5432 OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Examines<br />

research and theory related to the physical, mental and social well-being <strong>of</strong> employees.<br />

Includes work-family balance, occupational stress, job-related burnout, and<br />

workplace safety issues and violence.<br />

PSY 5492 CURRENT TOPICS IN I/O PSYCHOLOGY (1 credit). Focuses on<br />

current practice and research by visiting faculty in the areas <strong>of</strong> industrial/organizational<br />

psychology, including job analysis, stress and outplacement counseling.<br />

PSY 5494 SEMINAR IN CLINICAL-INDUSTRIAL/ORGANIZATIONAL<br />

PSYCHOLOGY (1 credit). Examines the common processes and functions in<br />

clinical and I/O psychology as well as the differing approaches to those functions<br />

represented by clinical and I/O methodologies.<br />

PSY 5496 PRACTICUM IN I/O PSYCHOLOGY (1–6 credits). Supervised<br />

work in appropriate I/O setting. (Requirement: Program chair approval.)<br />

PSY 5501 PERSONALITY AND PSYCHOTHERAPY (3 credits). Surveys<br />

and evaluates the major theories <strong>of</strong> personality and psychotherapy with a didactic<br />

introduction to the basic principles <strong>of</strong> case conceptualization and psychological<br />

treatment.<br />

PSY 5502 PSYCHOPATHOLOGY (3 credits). Introduces the classification and<br />

diagnosis <strong>of</strong> the major forms <strong>of</strong> behavioral and mental pathology and their relationship<br />

to models <strong>of</strong> psychotherapy. Prerequisites: PSY 5501.<br />

PSY 5503 FAMILY PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Covers theory, assessment,<br />

intervention, technique, ethics and research on the 12 major theories <strong>of</strong> family<br />

systems. There are both didactic and experiential components designed to teach the<br />

student to conceptualize systematically, and to design and implement appropriate<br />

interventions.<br />

PSY 5506 ADMINISTRATION OF MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES (3 credits).<br />

Coordinates mental health services in federal, state and community facilities.<br />

Surveys the services rendered by type <strong>of</strong> facility.<br />

PSY 5511 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY (3 credits). The role <strong>of</strong><br />

drugs in the modification <strong>of</strong> behavior. Examines sites <strong>of</strong> drug action, the systems<br />

affected and the rationale for drug therapy. Prerequisites: PSY 5105, PSY 5502.<br />

PSY 5513 LABORATORY IN FAMILY PSYCHOLOGY (1 credit). Provides<br />

the student with role-playing experience behind the one-way mirror from a variety<br />

<strong>of</strong> theoretical orientations including communications, multigenerational, structural,<br />

strategic-systemic, family reconstruction and Adlerian perspectives. Corequisites:<br />

PSY 5503.<br />

PSY 5521 ASSESSMENT OF INTELLIGENCE (3 credits). Familiarizes the<br />

student with the major intellectual assessment instruments currently in use, with<br />

emphasis on the administration, scoring and interpretation <strong>of</strong> the Wechsler Scales.<br />

Special attention given to historical, cross-cultural and ethnic minority issues and<br />

controversies involved in the assessment <strong>of</strong> intelligence. Corequisites: PSY 5522.<br />

PSY 5522 LABORATORY IN ASSESSMENT OF INTELLIGENCE (1 credit).<br />

Training in scoring and interpretation <strong>of</strong> intellectual assessment instruments covered<br />

in PSY 5521. Corequisites: PSY 5521.<br />

PSY 5524 LABORATORY IN ASSESSMENT OF PERSONALITY (1 credit).<br />

Training in scoring and interpretation <strong>of</strong> personality assessment instruments covered<br />

in PSY 5528. Corequisites: PSY 5528.<br />

PSY 5526 ASSESSMENT OF CHILD AND ADOLESCENT PERSONAL-<br />

ITY (3 credits). Covers the administration, scoring and interpretation <strong>of</strong> several <strong>of</strong><br />

the major current objective and projective personality assessment techniques suitable<br />

for application with children and adolescents. Also <strong>of</strong>fers an overview <strong>of</strong> the assessment<br />

process with children and adolescents. Prerequisites: PSY 5527.<br />

PSY 5527 OBJECTIVE PERSONALITY ASSESSMENT (3 credits). Introduces<br />

current major self-report personality tests with emphasis on administering,<br />

scoring and interpreting the MMPI-2/MMPI-A and familiarity with MCMI-III,<br />

NEO-PI-R, PAI, 16PF and various checklists. Includes test development issues,<br />

ethical standards, test feedback and report-writing skills. Prerequisites: PSY 5501,<br />

PSY 5521.<br />

PSY 5528 PROJECTIVE PERSONALITY ASSESSMENT (3 credits). Introduces<br />

semistructured and projective techniques with emphasis on administering,<br />

coding and interpreting the Rorschach (Exner System) and exposure to the TAT,<br />

sentence completion methods and projective drawing techniques. Includes exposure<br />

to dynamic/content analysis and integration <strong>of</strong> multiple sources <strong>of</strong> test data. Prerequisites:<br />

PSY 5527. Corequisites: PSY 5524.<br />

PSY 5541 CLINICAL SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES 1 (3 credits). Provides<br />

theory and experience in basic attending, listening, responding, personalizing and initiating<br />

skills. Students learn interviewing strategies, risk assessment, crisis intervention<br />

and integration <strong>of</strong> observational data with case conceptualization and treatment<br />

planning. Two credits <strong>of</strong> didactic and one <strong>of</strong> experiential laboratory.<br />

PSY 5542 CLINICAL SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES 2 (3 credits). Provides<br />

advanced training in psychotherapeutic techniques and case conceptualization skills<br />

necessary for effective psychotherapeutic treatment planning and interventions. Two<br />

credits <strong>of</strong> didactic and one <strong>of</strong> experiential laboratory. Prerequisites: PSY 5541.<br />

PSY 5543 PSYCHOTHERAPY WITH CHILDREN (3 credits). Studies the<br />

treatment <strong>of</strong> emotional, social and intellectual problems <strong>of</strong> children. Prerequisites:<br />

PSY 5561.<br />

PSY 5544 COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL APPROACHES TO TREATMENT<br />

(3 credits). Examines the theory and application <strong>of</strong> cognitive behavioral models <strong>of</strong><br />

therapy. Although didactic, this course begins at the theoretical level and moves<br />

toward application with emphasis on the practical application <strong>of</strong> cognitive behavioral<br />

techniques. Prerequisites: PSY 5501.<br />

PSY 5545 CLINICAL HYPNOSIS (3 credits). A journeyman’s guide to the<br />

various applications <strong>of</strong> hypnosis in psychotherapy. Focuses on tests for suggestibility,<br />

techniques for trance induction, age regression and hypnotic procedures with<br />

a variety <strong>of</strong> clinical problems to include anxiety disorders, habit disorders, sexual<br />

dysfunction and psychosomatic disorders. Prerequisites: PSY 5501.<br />

PSY 5547 DYNAMICS OF GROUP PSYCHOTHERAPY (3 credits). Studies<br />

group psychotherapy from the perspective <strong>of</strong> research on group dynamics. Considers<br />

the history and major types <strong>of</strong> group therapy, and provides an experiential component.<br />

Prerequisites: PSY 5501.<br />

PSY 5548 EXPERIENTIAL GROUP PSYCHOTHERAPY (1 credit). Participation<br />

in weekly group therapy facilitated by a non-faculty practitioner with the<br />

community.<br />

PSY 5549 PSYCHOTHERAPY TECHNIQUES (3 credits). Introduces specific<br />

psychotherapy techniques with theory, research, demonstration and student practice.<br />

Techniques selected from various schools <strong>of</strong> psychotherapy to include but not limited<br />

to behavior, cognitive and psychodynamic models. Prerequisites: PSY 5542.<br />

PSY 5551 FEMINIST APPROACHES TO EATING DISORDERS (1 credit).<br />

Emphasizes individual and group consciousness <strong>of</strong> eating problems within the<br />

context <strong>of</strong> historical and cultural influences. Explores literature on eating disorders as<br />

well as personal experiences.<br />

PSY 5552 ADVANCED TREATMENT ISSUES IN EATING DISORDERS<br />

(1 credit). Studies the didactic literature on treatment, experiential approaches and<br />

perspectives from people who have undergone outpatient and inpatient treatment.<br />

Includes experiential exercises, role playing and contribution to a prevention project.<br />

Prerequisites: PSY 5551.<br />

PSY 5553 PSYCHOTHERAPY MODELS: COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL<br />

(3 credits). Includes theory and conceptual foundations <strong>of</strong> cognitive behavioral<br />

approaches, and case conceptualization and treatment from a cognitive-behavioral<br />

perspective. A lab component incorporates discussion and modeling <strong>of</strong> techniques,<br />

emphasizing the practical application <strong>of</strong> cognitive-behavioral intervention procedures.<br />

Prerequisites: PSY 5542.<br />

PSY 5554 PSYCHOTHERAPY MODELS: PSYCHODYNAMIC (3 credits).<br />

Includes theory and conceptual foundations <strong>of</strong> psychodynamic approaches, and case<br />

conceptualization and treatment planning from a psychodynamic perspective. A lab<br />

component incorporates discussion and modeling <strong>of</strong> techniques, emphasizing the practical<br />

application <strong>of</strong> psychodynamic intervention procedures. Prerequisites: PSY 5542.<br />

PSY 5555 PSYCHOTHERAPY MODELS: HUMANISTIC/EXISTENTIAL<br />

(3 credits). Includes theory and conceptual foundations <strong>of</strong> humanistic/existential<br />

approaches, and conceptualization and treatment planning from a humanistic/existential<br />

perspective. A lab component incorporates discussion and modeling <strong>of</strong> techniques,<br />

emphasizing the practical application <strong>of</strong> humanistic/existential intervention<br />

procedures. Prerequisites: PSY 5542.<br />

PSY 5556 PSYCHOTHERAPY MODELS: FAMILY APPROACHES (3 credits).<br />

Includes theory and conceptual foundations <strong>of</strong> family treatment approaches, and case<br />

conceptualization and treatment planning from a family perspective. A lab component<br />

incorporates discussion and modeling <strong>of</strong> techniques, emphasizing the practical application<br />

<strong>of</strong> family intervention procedures. Prerequisites: PSY 5542.<br />

PSY 5561 CHILDREN’S BEHAVIOR DISORDERS (3 credits). Studies the<br />

nature, etiology, characteristics and assessment <strong>of</strong> emotional, social and intellectual<br />

problems <strong>of</strong> children.<br />

PSY 5565 CHILD DISORDERS AND PSYCHOTHERAPY (3 credits).<br />

Studies the nature, etiology, characteristics, assessment and treatment <strong>of</strong> emotional,<br />

social and intellectual problems <strong>of</strong> children.<br />

PSY 5570 MULTICULTURAL PSYCHOTHERAPY (3 credits). Provides an<br />

applied clinical overview <strong>of</strong> the major theoretical models <strong>of</strong> multicultural psychotherapy.<br />

Develops skills in using a multicultural orientation to guide the diagnosis,<br />

assessment and treatment <strong>of</strong> psychological disorders. Prerequisites: PSY 5120.<br />

PSY 5583 CLINICAL PRACTICE-CURRENT AND FUTURE TRENDS<br />

(3 credits). Familiarizes students with contexts, trends, dilemmas, cautions and<br />

possibilities <strong>of</strong> clinical practice in the 21st century. Surveys current realities and<br />

issues in healthcare and other systems, and considers creative models for the future.<br />
