PSY 4511 PRINCIPLES OF PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND EVALU-<br />

ATION (3 credits). The psychological principles, methods and techniques used<br />

to assess, develop and evaluate the effectiveness <strong>of</strong> programs. Includes needs<br />

assessment methods, principles <strong>of</strong> program design, gaining support for programs and<br />

general methods for evaluating programs. Prerequisites: PSY 3511.<br />

PSY 4515 PSYCHOLOGY HONORS THESIS (3 credits). Includes the preparation<br />

<strong>of</strong> an undergraduate thesis under supervision <strong>of</strong> a faculty member. Involves all<br />

components <strong>of</strong> the research process, including conceptualization, literature review,<br />

method and hypothesis development, data collection and analysis, and preparation <strong>of</strong><br />

the final document. May be repeated for a total <strong>of</strong> six credits. (Requirement: Acceptance<br />

to psychology honors program.) Prerequisites: PSY 3511.<br />

PSY 4521 ANIMAL LEARNING AND BEHAVIOR (3 credits). Surveys major<br />

topics including learning vs. unlearned behavior, communication, reproduction, cognition,<br />

social behavior and tool use. Employs evolutionary, genetic and environmental<br />

perspectives to understand behavior. Prerequisites: BIO 1020 or EDS 1032, PSY 1411,<br />

PSY 2511 or BIO 2801.<br />

PSY 4541 CULTURE AND PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Presents a theoretical<br />

basis for understanding the relationship between psychology and social science<br />

fields involving cultural studies, including cross-cultural psychology, psychological<br />

anthropology, cultural psychology, psychological sociology, ethnicity and multiculturalism.<br />

Emphasizes quantitative research methodology in these fields. (Requirement:<br />

Senior standing and instructor approval.) (SS) Prerequisites: PSY 3441, PSY 3442.<br />

Corequisites: PSY 3511.<br />

PSY 4590 PSYCHOLOGY HONORS SEMINAR (1 credit). Discusses theoretical<br />

and empirical research in psychology and related fields in a seminar format.<br />

May be repeated for a total <strong>of</strong> four credits. (Requirement: Acceptance to psychology<br />

honors program and department approval.)<br />

PSY 5000 CLINICAL COLLOQUIUM (0 credits). Provides speakers from the<br />

faculty, community and student body, covering a wide spectrum <strong>of</strong> psychological<br />

topics and areas <strong>of</strong> interest. Required for all Psy.D. students each fall and spring<br />

semester <strong>of</strong> their enrollment, with the exception <strong>of</strong> the internship year.<br />

PSY 5002 PRE-PRACTICUM (1 credit). Provides foundation skills and<br />

knowledge in preparation for practical training. Involves both didactic methods and<br />

opportunities to observe and shadow clinicians/advanced students in practice. Serves<br />

as an adjunct to PSY 5541 and PSY 5542.<br />

PSY 5101 STATISTICAL RESEARCH METHODS 1 (3 credits). Introduces<br />

psychological research methods and designs, including analysis and interpretation <strong>of</strong><br />

simple correlational and experimental designs.<br />

PSY 5102 STATISTICAL RESEARCH METHODS 2 (3 credits). Analyzes<br />

multifactor research designs using analysis <strong>of</strong> variance and related techniques,<br />

including the use <strong>of</strong> computerized statistical packages and data analysis. Prerequisites:<br />

PSY 5101.<br />

PSY 5105 BIOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF BEHAVIOR (3 credits).<br />

Emphasizes physiology and pharmacology <strong>of</strong> the synapse, neuroanatomy, sensory system<br />

and complexly motivated behavior. Views normal and abnormal behavior within<br />

the biological context and also addresses ethnic, racial, gender and sex-role diversity.<br />

PSY 5106 LIFE-SPAN DEVELOPMENT (3 credits). Overviews psychological<br />

principles, theories and research pertaining to human development from conception<br />

to death. Studies physical, cognitive, emotional, social and personality development<br />

with emphasis on theories, empirical data, research methods, and current issues.<br />

PSY 5108 HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Overviews the application <strong>of</strong><br />

psychological theory and technology to the understanding <strong>of</strong> etiology and treatment<br />

<strong>of</strong> disease, to the maintenance <strong>of</strong> health, and to the role <strong>of</strong> the psychologist within<br />

the healthcare system. Gives attention to prevention and wellness programs and to<br />

emerging theoretical models <strong>of</strong> the psychophysiological connection.<br />

PSY 5111 COGNITION (3 credits). Topics in cognitive psychology relating to<br />

the nature <strong>of</strong> thought. Considers the implications <strong>of</strong> evolutionary theory for human<br />

information processing in a technological age, perception and attention, memory,<br />

language, decision-making, judgment, problem solving and comprehension.<br />

PSY 5113 PROGRAM EVALUATION (3 credits). Tactics <strong>of</strong> scientific research,<br />

particularly as they apply to conducting and evaluating psychological service programs.<br />

Prerequisites: PSY 5102.<br />

PSY 5114 SUBSTANCE ABUSE: RESEARCH AND TREATMENT (3 credits).<br />

Overviews substance abuse. Theories <strong>of</strong> etiology and current models <strong>of</strong> detection,<br />

diagnosis and treatment modalities in the treatment <strong>of</strong> substance abuse. Examines<br />

environmental, biological, family and social interactions. Prerequisites: PSY 5502.<br />

PSY 5115 HISTORY AND SYSTEMS OF PSYCHOLOGY (2 credits). Covers<br />

major historic trends leading to modern psychology, including 16th and 17th century<br />

philosophers, 18th and 19th century brain and sensory physiologists, the school <strong>of</strong><br />

psychology that emerged in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and more modern trends<br />

in major content areas <strong>of</strong> psychology, most notably learning and personality.<br />

PSY 5116 COGNITIVE AND AFFECTIVE BASES OF BEHAVIOR (3 credits).<br />

Investigates cognitive bases through stimulus-response learning approaches, information<br />

processing and network theories <strong>of</strong> memory. Studies associative learning in affective<br />

behavior to conceptualize intervention approaches. Intertwines biological and cognitive<br />

theories <strong>of</strong> emotion. (Requirement: Graduate standing.)<br />

PSY 5120 CULTURE AND PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Presents a theoretical<br />

basis for understanding the relationship between psychology and cultural studies.<br />

Also presents theory and research from cross-cultural psychology, psychological<br />

anthropology, cultural psychology, psychological sociology and ethnic studies.<br />

PSY 5121 CULTURAL AND SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Reviews<br />

theory and research in cultural and social psychology and in the social sciences in<br />

order to develop an integrated conception <strong>of</strong> the individual within social, cultural,<br />

institutional and societal contexts. Presents applications <strong>of</strong> cultural and social theory<br />

to clinical and industrial/organizational psychology.<br />

PSY 5190 CURRENT TOPICS IN PSYCHOLOGY (1 credit). Discussion<br />

and reports on a selected topic <strong>of</strong> contemporary interest in psychological research<br />

and practice. Can be repeated for a total <strong>of</strong> four credits. (Requirement: Instructor<br />

approval.)<br />

PSY 5191 DIRECTED READINGS IN PSYCHOLOGY (1–3 credits).<br />

Selected readings in a specific topic under the direction <strong>of</strong> a faculty member. Can be<br />

repeated for a total <strong>of</strong> three credits. (Requirement: Program chair approval.)<br />

PSY 5192 SEMINAR IN PSYCHOLOGY (1 credit). Reports and discussion on<br />

current research and practice by students, faculty and visiting psychologists. Can be<br />

repeated for a total <strong>of</strong> four credits. (Requirement: Instructor approval.)<br />

PSY 5194 SEMINAR IN PLAY THERAPY (1 credit). Provides students with<br />

knowledge <strong>of</strong> the theory and purpose <strong>of</strong> play therapy, as well as basic skills in<br />

techniques <strong>of</strong> play therapy. Explores the research on the efficacy <strong>of</strong> play therapy as a<br />

treatment for children’s disorders. Prerequisites: PSY 5595.<br />

PSY 5197 SUPERVISED RESEARCH (0 credits). Directed research under the<br />

supervision <strong>of</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> the psychology faculty in a selected area <strong>of</strong> psychology.<br />

May be repeated. (Requirement: Program chair approval.)<br />

PSY 5198 SUPERVISED RESEARCH (1–3 credits). Directed research under<br />

the supervision <strong>of</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> the psychology faculty in a selected area <strong>of</strong> psychology.<br />

Can be repeated for a maximum <strong>of</strong> nine credits. (Requirement: Program director<br />

approval.)<br />

PSY 5401 INTRODUCTION TO INDUSTRIAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL<br />

PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Introduces major topics in personnel psychology and<br />

organizational behavior, including job analysis, personnel selection, training and<br />

performance appraisal, social influences on work behavior, job satisfaction, worker<br />

motivation, leadership and organizational communication.<br />

PSY 5402 TESTS AND MEASUREMENTS (3 credits). Introduces psychometric<br />

theory, survey <strong>of</strong> psychological testing and applications to business and industry.<br />

PSY 5403 APPLIED RESEARCH METHODS (3 credits). Experience in the<br />

research methodology as applied to workplace problems. Emphasizes correlational<br />

and regression analysis, survey methodology and problems encountered analyzing<br />

real-world data.<br />

PSY 5411 PERSONNEL SELECTION (3 credits). Examines current<br />

approaches to selection in industry. Focuses on attracting, selecting and placing<br />

personnel.<br />

PSY 5412 PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL (3 credits). Studies the application,<br />

research and theory in the performance appraisal area. Special emphasis on appraisal<br />

skills.<br />

PSY 5413 PERSONNEL LAW (3 credits). Presents ethical guidelines and legal<br />

requirements in general and as they apply to I/O psychology.<br />

PSY 5415 ORGANIZATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY (3 credits). Overviews organizational<br />

theories and their relationship to organizational effectiveness. Includes work<br />

motivation, organizational attitudes, group processes, leadership and organizational<br />

theory.<br />

PSY 5420 ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE AND TRANSFORMATION<br />

(3 credits). Overviews the incremental evolutionary and discontinuous aspects <strong>of</strong><br />

organizational change. In addition to reviewing modern transformational theories,<br />

gives practical experience in conducting organizational change interventions.<br />

PSY 5421 INDUSTRIAL TRAINING (3 credits). Examines the methods and<br />

applications <strong>of</strong> training in industry from an integrated systems approach.<br />

PSY 5422 GROUP AND TEAM DEVELOPMENT (3 credits). Surveys major<br />

interventions associated with group and team development within organizations.<br />

Interventions include group and team assessment, creative problem solving, decision<br />

making, resolving conflicts and management by objectives.<br />

PSY 5430 EMOTIONS IN THE WORKPLACE (3 credits). Covers theory<br />

and research on emotions in the workplace. Example topics include the nature <strong>of</strong><br />

emotional display rules, the influence <strong>of</strong> emotions on job attitudes, frameworks <strong>of</strong><br />

emotional intelligence, and the strategies that employees use to regulate their emotional<br />

displays at work. (Requirement: Program director approval.)<br />
