University College consists <strong>of</strong> four divisions that include Applied<br />

Research, Distance Learning, Extended Studies and Pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

Development. Academic <strong>of</strong>ferings include graduate degree and<br />

certificate programs at ten U.S. sites in five east coast states, as<br />

well as a distance learning program. Degrees have been conferred<br />

on <strong>of</strong>f-campus candidates representing the military services,<br />

federal and local government employees and a wide variety <strong>of</strong><br />

business and industry sectors. Through the extended studies division,<br />

the Melbourne site on the main campus <strong>of</strong>fers a master’s<br />

The Master <strong>of</strong> Science in Computer Information Systems is<br />

designed for students who seek a degree that prepares them for<br />

positions in organizations that design, develop or use computer<br />

systems. It is for students who do not necessarily have a bachelor’s<br />

degree in computer science but who wish to obtain advanced<br />

training with special emphasis on component engineering, objectoriented<br />

design and analysis, and the building and maintenance<br />

<strong>of</strong> data-driven systems. The objective <strong>of</strong> the program is to meet<br />

the demand for information systems skills and to provide a path<br />

for pr<strong>of</strong>essionals from diverse fields to rapidly transition to computer<br />

information systems career paths. The M.S. in computer<br />

information systems is also available completely available online<br />

through the Virtual Campus.<br />

Admission Requirements<br />

An applicant for the master’s program in computer information<br />

systems is not required to have a bachelor’s degree in computer<br />

science, but should have a background that includes mathematical<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>iciency beyond the level <strong>of</strong> college algebra. The GRE test<br />

is not required for admission into this degree program, but in<br />

those rare cases where the applicants’ abilities are not clear, the<br />

program chair reserves the right to require it.<br />

discussed in the Academic Overview section <strong>of</strong> this catalog.<br />

Degree Requirements<br />

The Master <strong>of</strong> Science in Computer Information Systems<br />

requires a minimum <strong>of</strong> 30 credit hours, as follows:<br />

CIS 5080 Projects in CIS (capstone course) ........................................3<br />

CIS 5100 Data Structures and Programming .......................................3<br />

CIS 5200 Advanced Programming .......................................................3<br />

CIS 5220 Computer Organization........................................................3<br />

CIS 5230 Operating Systems ...............................................................3<br />

Electives (15 credit hours)<br />

(at least 6 credit hours in CIS, CSE or SWE courses)<br />

A student who can verify competence in any required course<br />

may substitute an appropriate course with the permission <strong>of</strong> the<br />

appropriate site director and the program chair. Recommended<br />

electives include any BUS, CIS, CSE, ECE, MGT, MTH, ORP,<br />

SWE or SYS courses approved by the student’s adviser and the<br />

program chair.<br />

All students must take and complete the program capstone<br />

course, Projects in Computer Information Systems (CIS 5080),<br />

to graduate.<br />
