Introduces current theory and practice in production and operations management.<br />

Includes forecasting, quality, product/service design, work methods, facility layout and<br />

location, scheduling, inventory and project management. Prerequisites: BUS 3704.<br />

BUS 4502 ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR AND THEORY (3 credits). Overviews<br />

classical and contemporary approaches to organizational behavior and theory.<br />

Focus progresses from the micro (individual behavior) to macro (organizational<br />

processes, effectiveness and change). Special attention is given to group behavior.<br />

Prerequisites: BUS 3501.<br />

BUS 4503 BUSINESS ETHICS (3 credits). Applies moral reasoning to workrelated<br />

challenges encountered in modern organizations. Students consider personal<br />

values and organizational values in examining organizational culture as a metaphor<br />

for the moral environment <strong>of</strong> organization. Uses cases from business and government<br />

to help students practice. Prerequisites: BUS 3501.<br />

BUS 4504 SPECIAL TOPICS IN MANAGEMENT (3 credits). Includes subjects<br />

or issues that are <strong>of</strong> current concern to business and government organizations.<br />

Also provides students with an opportunity to study in greater depth, topics that may<br />

have been just surveyed in other courses. Normally requires a research paper. May be<br />

repeated for a maximum <strong>of</strong> nine credits. Prerequisites: BUS 3501.<br />

BUS 4508 WEB-BASED TECHNOLOGIES (3 credits). Explores concepts and<br />

practice <strong>of</strong> the implementation and delivery <strong>of</strong> Web-enabled information systems.<br />

Combines concepts and principles from database design, programming and Internet<br />

technology. Focuses on implementation, emphasizing hands-on design and development<br />

<strong>of</strong> Web-based information systems. Prerequisites: BUS 3504.<br />

BUS 4509 MANAGEMENT OF DATABASE SYSTEMS (3 credits). Concepts<br />

<strong>of</strong> database systems in a relational database management s<strong>of</strong>tware (RDBMS)<br />

environment, emphasizing data modeling, design and implementation. The entityrelationship<br />

model is used for conceptual design and an RDBMS is used for the<br />

physical design. Students are required to design a functional database. Prerequisites:<br />

BUS 3512.<br />

BUS 4516 GLOBAL STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT OF TECHNOLOGY<br />

(3 credits). Emphasizes technology, strategy and global competitive advantage.<br />

Develops the practical tools <strong>of</strong> strategy, planning and implementation at business<br />

and corporate levels. Investigates the strategies <strong>of</strong> technology-intensive international<br />

companies. Requires student teams to develop a five-year strategic plan for a global<br />

company or business unit. Prerequisites: BUS 3516, BUS 3517.<br />

BUS 4518 eBUSINESS DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION (3 credits).<br />

Examines e-commerce from business-to-consumer, business-to-business and intraorganizational<br />

perspectives. Also includes ERP, ASP, CRM, auctions and exchanges,<br />

data mining, ethics and security concerns. Requires group and final projects on the<br />

design and development <strong>of</strong> working e-commerce systems. Prerequisites: BUS 3516,<br />

BUS 3518.<br />

BUS 4583 SENIOR PROJECT (3 credits). Provides the experience <strong>of</strong> applying<br />

the concepts, tools and techniques introduced in previous courses. Project teams<br />

analyze, develop and reengineer the requirements for solving a real world management<br />

information system problem. Prerequisites: BUS 4509 or CSE 4020.<br />

BUS 4584 MIS PRACTICUM (3 credits). Real-world MIS managerial experience<br />

complements the varied academic disciplines covered in the curriculum. Minimum<br />

requirements include written and oral presentations, weekly summary reports and<br />

150 hours working at a host employer’s location. Must be taken in the final semester<br />

before graduation. For business management information systems majors only.<br />

Prerequisites: BUS 4783. Corequisites: BUS 4702.<br />

BUS 4585 INFORMATION MANAGEMENT PRACTICUM (3 credits). Provides<br />

real-world business experience to complement the varied academic disciplines<br />

covered in the information management curriculum. Minimum requirements include<br />

written and oral presentations, biweekly activity reports, group meetings and 150<br />

work hours at a host employer’s location. Must be taken in the final semester before<br />

graduation. For information management majors only. Prerequisites: BUS 4783.<br />

BUS 4601 MARKETING ANALYSIS AND STRATEGY (3 credits). Advanced<br />

study <strong>of</strong> the managerial aspects <strong>of</strong> marketing to include the decision areas pertaining<br />

to the marketing environment, opportunity analysis, marketing strategy and product,<br />

channel, price and promotional decisions. Uses cases to aid the student in experiencing<br />

real-life business situations. Prerequisites: BUS 3601.<br />

BUS 4605 RETAIL MANAGEMENT (3 credits). Presents the point <strong>of</strong> view <strong>of</strong><br />

a potential manager. Provides a foundation for management decision-making in a<br />

rapidly changing retail environment. Includes retail strategy, service retailing, legal<br />

and ethical issues, information systems, buyer behavior, merchandise management<br />

and international retailing. Prerequisites: BUS 3501, BUS 3601.<br />

BUS 4684 SENIOR BUSINESS RESEARCH (3 credits). Familiarizes the<br />

student with research methodologies commonly used in the social sciences. The<br />

essential goals are to enable students to conduct research and interpret research findings<br />

and assess the quality <strong>of</strong> published research. (Requirement: Senior standing.)<br />

Prerequisites: BUS 2703.<br />

BUS 4686 INTERNATIONAL MARKETING (3 credits). Addresses the<br />

importance <strong>of</strong> gathering, analyzing, disseminating and responding to international<br />

sources <strong>of</strong> marketing intelligence. Students learn to analyze environmental forces,<br />

make marketing mix decisions, and plan and implement international market entry<br />

strategies. Prerequisites: BUS 3601.<br />

BUS 4687 CONSUMER BEHAVIOR (3 credits). Examines the consumer decision-making<br />

process and its societal, cultural, environmental, group and economic<br />

determinants. Gives particular attention to the consumer motivations, values, wants<br />

and needs in determining consumer behavior. Prerequisites: BUS 3601.<br />

BUS 4701 INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS (3 credits). Introduces the environmental<br />

factors confronting managers in international operations: cultural, economic,<br />

legal, political and institutional determinants. Examines problems associated with<br />

managing organizational, financial, marketing and production policies in a global<br />

marketplace. Prerequisites: BUS 3401, BUS 3501.<br />

BUS 4702 BUSINESS STRATEGY AND POLICY (3 credits). Reviews basic<br />

concepts and techniques used in formulating competitive strategy at the corporate,<br />

business and functional levels. Introduces business models to provide a learning<br />

experience in quantitative aspects <strong>of</strong> strategy formulation in a competitive environment.<br />

Must be taken in the final semester before graduation. Prerequisites: BUS 4501.<br />

Corequisites: BUS 4284 or BUS 4584 or BUS 4782 or BUS 4784.<br />

BUS 4705 FINANCE IN PRIVATELY OWNED COMPANIES (3 credits).<br />

Explores alternative capital structures and financial structures <strong>of</strong> private companies,<br />

managing cash balances and cash flow to sustain company growth, questions <strong>of</strong> intellectual<br />

property and the valuation <strong>of</strong> non-publicly traded companies. Prerequisites:<br />

BUS 3401.<br />

BUS 4782 PRACTICUM IN BUSINESS (6 credits). Real-world business<br />

experience complements the varied academic disciplines covered in the business<br />

curriculum. Minimum requirements include written and oral presentations, weekly<br />

summary reports and 240 hours working at a host employer’s location. Must be taken<br />

in the final semester before graduation. (Requirement: Senior standing in College <strong>of</strong><br />

Business.) Corequisites: BUS 4702.<br />

BUS 4783 PRACTICUM PLANNING (0 credits). Allows the student real-world<br />

business experience that complements the varied academic disciplines covered in<br />

the business curriculum. The planning process must be taken in the second to last<br />

semester before graduation. (Requirement: Senior standing in business.)<br />

BUS 4784 BUSINESS PRACTICUM (3 credits). Real-world business<br />

experience complements the varied academic disciplines covered in the business<br />

curriculum. Minimum requirements include written and oral presentations, weekly<br />

BUS 4785 eCOMMERCE TECHNOLOGY PRACTICUM (3 credits). Provides<br />

work hours at a host employer’s location. Must be taken in the final semester before<br />

BUS 4790 DIRECTED BUSINESS STUDY (3 credits). Studies in depth the<br />

topics or problems <strong>of</strong> current interest to practicing managers. Requires students to<br />

develop and present a formal report that includes a statement <strong>of</strong> the objectives <strong>of</strong> the<br />

study effort, survey <strong>of</strong> the literature, methodology, analysis, results, conclusions and,<br />

if appropriate, recommendations. (Requirement: Associate dean approval.)<br />

BUS 4801 INTERNATIONAL TRADE (3 credits). Investigates why nations<br />

trade, what they trade and how they benefit from exchange. Includes topics on<br />

classical, neoclassical, modern and post-modern theories <strong>of</strong> trade; commercial policy<br />

instruments and their welfare effects; economic integration; international factor<br />

movements; and trade development. Prerequisites: BUS 3802.<br />

BUS 4802 GLOBAL ACCOUNTING AND TAX (3 credits). Integrates the<br />

functional areas <strong>of</strong> accounting with business administration in a global decision-making<br />

framework. Provides business managers with an understanding <strong>of</strong> the numerous<br />

differences that exist between countries and the problems multinational companies<br />

face in interpreting international accounting information. Prerequisites: BUS 2211,<br />

BUS 2212.<br />

BUS 4803 GLOBAL FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT (3 credits). Extends the<br />

principles <strong>of</strong> finance to an international context. Emphasizes currency fluctuation,<br />

measuring and hedging exchange rate risk, comparative capital structure, multinational<br />

investment, international capital budgeting and taxes. Prerequisites: BUS 3401,<br />
