HUM 2142 WORLD ART HISTORY 2: EARLY MODERN TO POST-<br />

COLONIAL (3 credits). Surveys world art history and methodology from circa 1500<br />

to present day. Emphasizes analyzing and understanding works <strong>of</strong> painting, sculpture,<br />

photography, textiles, decorative arts, alternative art forms and new media in their<br />

respective historical and cultural contexts. (HU/SS) Prerequisites: COM 1102.<br />

HUM 2151 MUSIC THEORY 1 (3 credits). Examines notational elements, intervals,<br />

chords and tonal harmony. Includes basic singing, and keyboard and dictation<br />

HUM 2250 LITERATURE: VOICE AND VISION (3 credits). A close reading<br />

and interpretation <strong>of</strong> texts representing the major genres <strong>of</strong> literature: short story,<br />

HUM 2385 SPECIAL TOPICS IN WORLD HISTORY (3 credits). Examines<br />

cultural, geographical and philosophical issues in world history. Topics announced<br />

HUM 2480 INTRODUCTION TO POLITICAL SCIENCE (3 credits).<br />

Introduces students to the theories and concepts <strong>of</strong> political science. Emphasizes<br />

examining the interaction between ideas, values and institutions in contemporary<br />

U.S. political culture. (SS)<br />

HUM 2510 LOGIC (3 credits). Deals mainly with deductive logic, although all the<br />

fallacies <strong>of</strong> reasoning are examined in both an informal and a formal context. Brings<br />

out the role <strong>of</strong> logic in science and law, as well as ways <strong>of</strong> making formal pro<strong>of</strong>s <strong>of</strong><br />

validity. (HU) Prerequisites: COM 1101.<br />

HUM 2570 BIOETHICS (3 credits). Studies ethical questions raised by 20thcentury<br />

technology as they affect medicine, ecology and social issues. (HU)<br />

HUM 3026 THE CIVILIZATION OF ISLAM (3 credits). Focuses on some <strong>of</strong><br />

the achievements <strong>of</strong> Islam from 7th-century Arabic, to medieval Spain and India, to<br />

the 20th century. Uses documents from literature, theology, architecture, science and<br />

the contemporary media. (HU) Prerequisites: HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3085 SPECIAL TOPICS IN HUMANITIES (3 credits). Offers interdisciplinary<br />

study <strong>of</strong> a particular period, movement, genre or individual that embraces<br />

more than a single humanistic discipline. Topics announced prior to registration.<br />

HUM 3150 MASTERWORKS OF MUSIC (3 credits). Works <strong>of</strong> master composers<br />

in the various stylistic periods, 1600 to the present: Bach and Handel; Mozart<br />

and Haydn; Beethoven; the 19th century and early 20th centuries. (HU) Prerequisites:<br />

HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3151 MEDIEVAL, RENAISSANCE AND BAROQUE MUSIC<br />

(3 credits). Surveys musical styles and practices from the Middle Ages through<br />

the Renaissance. Includes an extended look at the baroque style. Prerequisites:<br />

HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3152 CLASSICAL, ROMANTIC AND MODERN MUSIC (3 credits).<br />

Surveys works <strong>of</strong> master composers from the late Baroque (Bach and Handel)<br />

through Mozart, Beethoven and the Romantics, to 20th- and 21st-century musicians.<br />

Prerequisites: HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3185 SPECIAL TOPICS IN FINE ARTS (3 credits). Studies a particular<br />

period, movement or individual artist or composer. Topics announced prior to registration.<br />

HUM 3230 SHAKESPEARE AND HIS CONTEMPORARIES (3 credits).<br />

Explores the development <strong>of</strong> English theater during the reign <strong>of</strong> Queen Elizabeth I<br />

and King James I. Students read representative plays by Shakespeare and his contemporaries.<br />

HUM 3255 THE SHORT STORY (3 credits). Studies the development <strong>of</strong> the<br />

short story as a literary form with particular emphasis on the outstanding practitioners<br />

<strong>of</strong> this genre in the 20th century. Gives attention to recent trends in the short<br />

story. (HU) Prerequisites: HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3275 CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE (3 credits). Studies literature<br />

since the 1960s. May include short stories, plays, poems and novels by McGuane,<br />

Davies, Percy, Fowles, Pinter, Beckett and Morrison. The syllabus varies considerably<br />

from semester to semester. (HU) Prerequisites: HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3280 NARRATIVE FILM (3 credits). Examines the structures and<br />

techniques that narrative films use to communicate ideas. Students examine films<br />

from various genres, <strong>of</strong> different types and from all periods <strong>of</strong> film history. (HU)<br />

HUM 3285 SPECIAL TOPICS IN LITERATURE (3 credits). Studies a particular<br />

author, a group <strong>of</strong> authors, a historical literary movement or a literary theme<br />

HUM 3331 AMERICAN HISTORY: PRE-COLUMBIAN TO CIVIL WAR<br />

ERA (3 credits). Surveys some <strong>of</strong> the basic problems in U.S. history through the<br />

Civil War era. Emphasizes origins, social characteristics and competing cultural<br />

values <strong>of</strong> the peoples that formed the American nation. (HU/SS) Prerequisites:<br />

THE PRESENT (3 credits). Examines the major ideas, ideals and events that<br />

have determined the American experience in the 19th and 20th centuries. (HU/SS)<br />

HUM 3351 HISTORY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY: ANCIENT<br />

AND MEDIEVAL (3 credits). Surveys the origins <strong>of</strong> science in antiquity and the<br />

Middle Ages. Includes development <strong>of</strong> mathematical, physical and biological thought<br />

in the ancient and medieval period, and the relationship between science, technology<br />

HUM 3352 HISTORY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY: RENAIS-<br />

SANCE TO PRESENT (3 credits). Surveys the principal developments in science,<br />

mathematics and technology from the Renaissance to the present. Includes scientific<br />

revolution, development <strong>of</strong> modern biology and the relationship between technology<br />

HUM 3385 SPECIAL TOPICS IN HISTORY (3 credits). Offers an opportunity<br />

for in-depth analysis <strong>of</strong> a historical problem or event. Includes a wide range <strong>of</strong> possibilities.<br />

HUM 3485 SPECIAL TOPICS IN SOCIAL SCIENCE (3 credits). Studies<br />

a particular social group or institution, social process or social change. Topics<br />

HUM 3521 WORLD RELIGIONS (3 credits). Introduces religion and examines<br />

the philosophy <strong>of</strong> religion. Religion is seen as humanity’s attempt to grapple with the<br />

question <strong>of</strong> the meaning <strong>of</strong> life, the forms that religious perspectives have taken<br />

and the universal aspects <strong>of</strong> human existence. (HU) Prerequisites: HUM 2051,<br />

HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3551 SURVEY OF ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY<br />

(3 credits). Surveys the history <strong>of</strong> philosophy from its beginnings with the pre-<br />

Socratic Greeks up through its influence on Christian scholasticism in the Middle<br />

Ages. Covers the sweep <strong>of</strong> intellectual history from Thales to Thomas. (HU) Prerequisites:<br />

HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3552 SURVEY OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY PHILOSO-<br />

PHY (3 credits). Surveys philosophy beginning with the Renaissance rise <strong>of</strong> science.<br />

Follows rationalism and empiricism, the philosophies <strong>of</strong> Kant, Hegel and Marx, and<br />

concludes with two main movements <strong>of</strong> the 20th century: analytic philosophy and<br />

existentialism. (HU) Prerequisites: HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 3585 SPECIAL TOPICS IN PHILOSOPHY (3 credits). Studies a<br />

particular period, movement, or individual philosopher or religious figure. Topics<br />

announced prior to registration. (HU) Prerequisites: HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 4100 SENIOR CAPSTONE PROJECT (3 credits). A project consisting<br />

<strong>of</strong> original research that will result in a substantial written work about a significant<br />

issue in the humanities. Serves as the culmination <strong>of</strong> a humanities major’s undergraduate<br />

program. (Requirement: Senior standing and department head approval.)<br />

HUM 4150 INDEPENDENT STUDY (3 credits). Offers the humanities major<br />

an opportunity to study a particular period, movement, genre or individual under the<br />

supervision <strong>of</strong> a faculty member. (Requirement: Department head approval.) (HU)<br />

Prerequisites: HUM 2051, HUM 2052.<br />

HUM 4510 RECENT ISSUES IN LOGIC (3 credits). Introduces the many<br />

competing systems <strong>of</strong> logic recently developed and advocated. Also addresses the<br />

debate inspired by logical pluralism. (Requirement: Prerequisite course or instructor<br />

approval.) Prerequisites: ECE 1551 or HUM 2510.<br />

HUM 5020 THE ROOTS OF RHETORIC: CLASSICAL AND HISTORI-<br />

CAL PERSPECTIVES (3 credits). Includes a study <strong>of</strong> the origins and principles<br />

<strong>of</strong> rhetoric from ancient Greece through the 14th century. Special emphasis is<br />

placed on major texts, historical figures, central issues and analytical aspects <strong>of</strong> the<br />

discipline.<br />

HUM 5510 RECENT ISSUES IN LOGIC (3 credits). Introduces non-classical<br />

systems including modal, intuitionistic, many-valued, fuzzy, paraconsistent and<br />

non-monotonic logics. Also addresses applications for these logics and the logical<br />

pluralism debate. Prerequisites: HUM 2510.<br />

INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDY<br />

IDS 1010 COMMUNITY SERVICE (1 credit). Fosters the development <strong>of</strong><br />

self-reflective, culturally aware and responsible community participants through a<br />

community service volunteer experience. Requires reflective writing and discussions,<br />

and assigned readings.
