Science Education __________________________<br />

The curriculum leads to a bachelor <strong>of</strong> science degree with<br />

options in biology, chemistry, earth and space science, physics<br />

and middle grades general science. All applicants must meet the<br />

current entrance requirements for teacher-education programs<br />

established by the <strong>Florida</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Education. Formal<br />

application is made no later than the first semester <strong>of</strong> the junior<br />

year. Application procedures and requirements may be found in<br />

the department’s Student Handbook.<br />

A full year <strong>of</strong> student teaching during the senior year provides the<br />

student with many experiences encountered in the teaching pr<strong>of</strong>ession.<br />

To graduate from a teacher-education program approved<br />

by the <strong>Florida</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Education, the student must complete<br />

and demonstrate competence in the uniform core curriculum<br />

established pursuant to Section 1004.04 F.S., which includes<br />

competencies and skills for teacher certification as prescribed in<br />

Rule 6A04.0021, F.A.C., and competencies 1 and 2 <strong>of</strong> the State<br />

Board-approved reading endorsement, as well as additional content<br />

and instructional practices listed in Sections 1004.04(2), (3)<br />

and (5), F.S. In addition, students must complete the course work<br />

from an approved program plan with a minimum 2.5 GPA, pass<br />

all <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Florida</strong> Teacher Certification Examinations (General<br />

Knowledge, Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Education and Subject Area) and earn<br />

a minimum 3.0 grade point average for 18 credit hours <strong>of</strong> student<br />

teaching.<br />

Teacher preparation programs in the state <strong>of</strong> <strong>Florida</strong> are required<br />

by Title II, section 207, <strong>of</strong> the Higher Education Act to make<br />

public their Institutional Report Cards. <strong>Florida</strong> Tech’s report card<br />

may be found online at www.fit.edu/education.<br />
