BUS 5440 FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT (3 credits). Studies the concepts and<br />

tools <strong>of</strong> corporate financial management and financial planning, including capital<br />

budgeting, capital structure and net working capital. Considers the importance <strong>of</strong><br />

ethics in financial decision-making.<br />

BUS 5446 INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT (3 credits). Investigates the<br />

concepts, theories and techniques underlying the development <strong>of</strong> investment policies<br />

and strategies.<br />

BUS 5447 ENTREPRENEURIAL FINANCE (3 credits). Explores both the<br />

capital structure and financial needs <strong>of</strong> a start-up company. In addition, students gain<br />

an understanding <strong>of</strong> intellectual property, as well as the techniques used to value<br />

nonpublicly traded companies. Prerequisites: BUS 5440.<br />

BUS 5450 ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR (3 credits). Presents existing<br />

research, theories and models explaining how individual and group behavior and<br />

processes shape the internal dynamics <strong>of</strong> organizations. Provides the foundation to<br />

understand contemporary debates concerning alternative organizational designs and<br />

management practices.<br />

BUS 5455 PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT (3 credits). Surveys personnel<br />

management practices and procedures, including wage and salary considerations,<br />

employee benefits and incentives, and labor-management relations. Emphasizes the<br />

individual within the organization and the development <strong>of</strong> the human resource.<br />

BUS 5456 EMPLOYMENT LAW (3 credits). Examines federal regulations<br />

governing the relationship between employees and employers, and emphasizes their<br />

respective rights and responsibilities. Includes discrimination, sexual harassment,<br />

affirmative action, privacy, terminating employees, compensation and benefit regulations,<br />

family leave, and safety and health. Prerequisites: BUS 5400.<br />

BUS 5457 NEGOTIATION AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION (3 credits).<br />

Examines the management <strong>of</strong> conflict in organizations at the level <strong>of</strong> the individual<br />

and the group. Provides a background in alternatives to litigation models including<br />

negotiation, mediation, peer-review systems and arbitration. Uses simulation exercises<br />

to develop the student’s skills in applying various forms <strong>of</strong> dispute resolution.<br />

BUS 5458 LEADERSHIP THEORY AND EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT<br />

(3 credits). Teaches the leadership process and techniques used to train leaders by<br />

reading the literature, analyzing cases <strong>of</strong> corporate leadership and participation in<br />

experiential exercises that are used in leadership training. Also reinforces leadership<br />

skills <strong>of</strong> interpersonal interaction, written analysis and oral presentation. Prerequisites:<br />

BUS 5450.<br />

BUS 5460 MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS (3 credits).<br />

Addresses policy and management issues surrounding information systems in today’s<br />

enterprises: strategic use, organizational impact, project management, human<br />

resource issues and other topics germane to understanding management information<br />

systems.<br />

BUS 5461 PRODUCTION AND OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT (3 credits).<br />

Covers the translation <strong>of</strong> product and service requirements into facilities, procedures<br />

and operating organizations. Includes product design, production alternatives, facilities<br />

location and layout, resource requirements planning, quality control and project<br />

management. Uses live case analyses. Prerequisites: BUS 5411.<br />

BUS 5462 INFORMATION SECURITY (3 credits). Covers information security<br />

techniques from a managerial perspective. Includes network and host security,<br />

cryptography, authentication, security policies, intrusion detection and forensics, and<br />

related managerial responsibilities. Prepares the student for the Center for Immigration<br />

and National Security (CINCS) Level-1 examination.<br />

BUS 5465 MANAGING INFORMATION (3 credits). Explores how organizations<br />

gather, represent, process and distribute information and knowledge to<br />

employees and customers. Includes knowledge management, knowledge workers<br />

productivity, data and process modeling and data mining. Examines major issues<br />

relating to information processing and its management at the individual, group, and<br />

organizational levels.<br />

BUS 5466 MANAGING SYSTEMS (3 credits). Provides a foundation <strong>of</strong> critical<br />

issues in the design and implementation <strong>of</strong> business and information systems<br />

change. Focuses on the interdependence <strong>of</strong> information technologies and organizational<br />

characteristics by examining managing business redesign, IT leadership,<br />

managing projects and changes, and managing enterprise information systems.<br />

BUS 5467 MANAGING ELECTRONIC COMMERCE (3 credits). Examines<br />

the use <strong>of</strong> electronic commerce from business to consumer, business to business<br />

and intra-organizational perspectives to reflect the Internet and global communications<br />

networks that have emerged as powerful strategic assets, providing increased<br />

opportunity and uncertainty for business leaders.<br />

BUS 5470 MARKETING MANAGEMENT (3 credits). Examines the tools and<br />

techniques <strong>of</strong> managing marketing activities as well as an analysis <strong>of</strong> the marketing<br />

process. Emphasizes decision-making, the refinement <strong>of</strong> skills needed to recognize<br />

and solve marketing problems, and effective communication <strong>of</strong> recommendations.<br />

Uses case analysis extensively. Prerequisites: BUS 5421, BUS 5431.<br />

BUS 5476 STRATEGIC MARKETING (3 credits). Includes strategic analysis<br />

<strong>of</strong> a firm’s activities from the marketer’s point <strong>of</strong> view. Gives attention to marketing<br />

strategy formulation, implementation and control. Assesses strategies for the<br />

functional areas <strong>of</strong> marketing (product, pricing, distribution and promotion) and their<br />

relevant application to e-commerce. Prerequisites: BUS 5470.<br />

BUS 5480 STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT (3 credits). In-depth analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

industries and competitors, and how to build and defend competitive advantages in<br />

forming a successful competitive strategy. Case analysis and management simulation<br />

convey the multifunctional nature <strong>of</strong> decision making at the top management level.<br />

Augmented by live-case analyses. Must be taken in the final semester prior to<br />

graduation.<br />

BUS 5486 INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS (3 credits). Emphasizes economic,<br />

social, cultural, legal and environmental influences on the formulation and execution<br />

<strong>of</strong> the business policy <strong>of</strong> firms engaged in multinational business. Students explore<br />

the functions, problems and decision-making processes <strong>of</strong> multinational business<br />

organizations. Prerequisites: BUS 5440.<br />

BUS 5487 NEW VENTURE DEVELOPMENT (3 credits). Students examine<br />

the critical elements <strong>of</strong> creating and nurturing new business ventures; screen and<br />

evaluate ideas in the formulation phase, identify sources <strong>of</strong> funds and determine<br />

means to obtain financing; select a start-up activity and prepare a business plan that<br />

represents the basis for forming a company.<br />

BUS 5488 CORPORATE INNOVATION AND NEW VENTURES (3 credits).<br />

Covers the discovery and identification <strong>of</strong> new business opportunities, the process<br />

<strong>of</strong> creation within the context <strong>of</strong> a mature company, the processes <strong>of</strong> growth through<br />

acquisition, and the absorption, discontinuance or spinning out <strong>of</strong> businesses.<br />

BUS 5499 INTERNSHIP (3 credits). Students must register with the director <strong>of</strong><br />

industry/education programs in the College <strong>of</strong> Business at least two months prior to<br />

the start <strong>of</strong> the semester. Minimum requirements include formal written and oral<br />

presentations, weekly summary reports and a minimum <strong>of</strong> 120 hours working at a<br />

host employer’s location. (Requirement: Associate dean approval.)<br />

BUS 5840 FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT POLICY (3 credits). Introduces the<br />

three primary areas <strong>of</strong> concern to financial policy makers (capital budgeting, capital<br />

structure and working capital) and integrates this framework with a range <strong>of</strong> international<br />

financial concepts. Also explores the pr<strong>of</strong>ound effect that foreign operations<br />

can have on financial statements.<br />

BUS 5858 LEADING IN THE TECHNOLOGY-ORIENTED ENTERPRISE<br />

(3 credits). Examines the leadership challenges inherent in managing a technologyoriented<br />

enterprise. Presents various leadership approaches and describes their application<br />

in managing innovation and technology. Also addresses the role <strong>of</strong> leadership<br />

in system design and development in integrated product teams.<br />

BUS 5870 GLOBAL MARKETING MANAGEMENT (3 credits). Emphasizes<br />

the global nature <strong>of</strong> marketing and the factors that shape it, including analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

the multilateral environment in which firms operate, global marketing research and<br />

alternative strategies for market entry and development. Contemporary topics<br />

may include relationship marketing, sourcing strategy and business-to-business<br />

marketing.<br />

BUS 5880 STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT IN TECHNOLOGY BUSI-<br />

NESSES (3 credits). Includes the difference between major strategy concepts and<br />

analytical techniques, and their application to businesses in rapidly changing hightech<br />

industries that span the globe.<br />

BUS 5899 FINAL SEMESTER THESIS (0–2 credits). Variable registration for<br />

thesis completion after satisfaction <strong>of</strong> minimum registration requirements. (Requirements:<br />

Accepted petition to graduate and approval by Office <strong>of</strong> Graduate Programs.)<br />

BUS 5999 THESIS (3–6 credits). Students must register with the director <strong>of</strong><br />

CHE 1091 NANOSCIENCE/NANOTECHNOLOGY LABORATORY<br />

(1 credit). Introduces science/engineering freshmen interested in careers in nanoscience<br />

research/nanotechnology to techniques <strong>of</strong> nanomaterial fabrication by thin<br />

film deposition and chemical synthesis, and sample characterization techniques like<br />

atomic force and scanning tunneling microscopes. (Requirement: Freshman status or<br />

instructor approval.) Prerequisites: CHM 1101.<br />

CHE 1101 INTRODUCTION TO CHEMICAL ENGINEERING 1 (2 credits).<br />

Introduces the chemical engineering pr<strong>of</strong>ession. Discusses the role <strong>of</strong> an engineer as a<br />

problem solver dealing with multiple constraints. Covers process flowsheets, and piping<br />

and instrumentation diagrams in Micros<strong>of</strong>t PowerPoint. (Requirement: Must be<br />
