ABSTRACT
Large amounts of flat oysters, Ostrea edulis, dating from the Middle Ages are frequently recovered from middens along the French Atlantic
facade. Some of the middens are genuine hills eight metres high. But most are less well known because of their position beneath the modern
surface. The economic impact of activities linked to these middens has been largely underestimated. One of them, located at Beauvoir-sur-Mer,
was recently excavated. Our first aim in analyzing these deposits was to determine if oyster was the only species represented. With that in mind
we sampled and sieved the deposit. More than three thousand valves of oysters were studied. Biometric analysis linked to the observation of
the opening scars gives information on the technique used to gather the bivalve. The associated fauna informs us about the territory exploited.
This study shows that the exploitation of oysters in some of these sites was a specialized activity, with massive extraction and export of oyster
meat. The economic importance of these localities on the French Atlantic littoral has been underestimated for the Middle Ages.
LABURPENA
Frantziako fatxada atlantikoan, Ostrea edulis ostra lauaren metaketa handiak (Erdi Arokoak) dokumentatzen dira sarritan. Metaketa horietako
batzuk paisaian nabarmentzen dira, zortzi metroko altuerako gailurrak osatzen baitituzte, baina gehienak ez dira behar bezala ezagutzen,
gaur egun lur azpian daudelako. Horregatik ez da sarritan behar bezala balioetsi ostra horiekin lotutako jarduera ekonomikoa. Metaketa horietako
batean, Beauvoir-sur-Mer kantonamendukoan, indusketak egin dira duela gutxi. Laginak atera eta sistematikoki bahetu zen; helburu nagusia
zen maskortegia soilik espezi horrek osatzen zuen ala ez jakitea. Ostren hiru mila kusku baino gehiago aztertu dira. Maskorren irekiduren
markak hautematearekin lotutako analisi biometrikoek bibalbioak biltzeko erabilitako teknikari buruzko informazioa ematen dute. Horrekin lotutako
faunak osatzen du bilketa-eremuaren esparrua. Ikerketak erakusten du aztarnategi arkeologiko batzuetako ostren ustiapena jarduera espezializatua
zela, eta bibalbioaren haragia ateratzen zutela, esportatzeko. Frantziako kostalde atlantikoko guneek Erdi Aroan zuten garrantzia gutxietsi
dela uste dugu.
1. INTRODUCTION
Studies of shells in archaeological contexts are
still rare in France, and this makes it difficult to
incorporate the present studies of shells in general
chronological context. Another obstacle is the
absence of a good description of the shelly deposits
during the excavations discussed here. This
explains some absences in the malacological
study presented in this paper: paucity of elements
of datation and of the stratigraphic description of
this accumulation of shells. The shell analysis presented
has been realized in 2006, twenty-two years
after the excavation of the Beauvoir-sur-Mer site.
