The Nassarius mutabilis specimen should probably<br />

be included within the personal ornamentation<br />

assemblage at El Horno, as when this species<br />

is found at archaeological sites it has usually been<br />

made into a shell bead, such as at Le Figuier<br />

(Gard, France), in a context with the same chronology<br />

as El Horno (Taborin 1993, Álvarez-Fernández<br />

2006). However, the specimen from El Horno is<br />

fragmented and decalcified and it is difficult to<br />

reach a definite conclusion in this respect.<br />

4. LOCAL AND REGIONAL CONTEXT<br />

4.1. In the case of the Asón Valley, archaeomalacological<br />

analyses of greater or lesser detail<br />

have been made for four sites: El Perro, La Chora 2 ,<br />

El Otero and El Horno. Other sites are currently<br />

being studied (La Fragua and El Mirón). We cannot<br />

take the data from the excavations at El Valle<br />

into account, because of the dubious chronological<br />

attribution of the material 3 .<br />

Except at El Horno, in the cited deposits with<br />

available information, the malacological fauna is<br />

dominated by species with dietary interest.<br />

Although Mytilus sp., Ostrea sp. and Cerastoderma<br />

sp. are present at El Horno, in the lower part of the<br />

valley, taxa with no ornamental value predominate.<br />

Thus, in Levels 2 and 3 at El Otero, almost all the<br />

species have dietary value, and Ostrea edulis and<br />

Patella sp. are the most abundant molluscs<br />

(Madariaga 1966).<br />

At El Perro, nearly 95% of the MNI are of dietary<br />

interest, with a predominance of Patella sp.,<br />

followed by Littorina littorea and Mytilus galloprovincialis<br />

(Moreno 1994). At La Fragua, a similar<br />

At this site, all the cited species, except Turritella sp. have dietary value, and Patella vulgata, Ostrea edulis and Crassostrea gigas are abundant.<br />

At least one of the Turritella sp. specimens had been made into a suspended object of adornment (Madariaga 1963). However, the<br />

chronological attribution of the archaeological remains is unsure, as a later revision of the material revealed that the deposit at La Chora also<br />

includes an Azilian occupation (González-Sainz 1989).<br />

A Turritella sp. specimen was found, amongst other objects of adornment, during the original excavations carried out by H. Breuil and H.<br />

Obermaier between 1909 and 1912 (Álvarez-Fernández 2006). These objects were ascribed to a generic Magdalenian, probably late<br />

Magdalenian. Similarly, the scarce objects (1 specimen of Turritella sp. (NR:1) and 1 valve of Veneridae family (NR:1)) found by more recent<br />

excavations, which we have examined in the MRPAC, come from the G1C2/1 sondage, Level 1, strata 1.7, a context difficult to attribute chronologically<br />

(García-Gelabert and Talavera 2004, 163).<br />
