The multimedia database consists of all the books and their accompanying materials such<br />
as digitized gramophone records, audio tapes, video cassettes, film strips, etc, using 856<br />
tag in the work sheet, current/back volumes of journals, theses and dissertations and their<br />
digitized version, gratis books and maps. For maps “High resolution” facility is provided<br />
in the software <strong>for</strong> viewing and navigating.<br />
Virtua Software is being used <strong>for</strong> all the house keeping operation. The library has replaced<br />
its card catalogue with OPAC. Bar-code technology is being used <strong>for</strong> circulation<br />
transactions.<br />
The in<strong>for</strong>mation services provided on intranet are Current Awareness Services, New<br />
Acquisition Services, Contents of Periodicals in linguistics and Allied Services, Online<br />
News-papers clippings Services, Gratis books, Theses and dissertations etc.<br />
The library has 25 terminals installed exclusively connected through LAN to the Sun<br />
Server. The user has a wide range search capability by author, title, subject, keywords,<br />
language etc along with the electronic database<br />
After the completion of the retro-conversion task of its centers, the ambitious plan is to<br />
make it as a “National In<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> Indian Languages and Linguistics”. The<br />
CIIL database which includes bibliographic records of its seven centers will serve as an<br />
Indian Languages and Linguistics union catalog which will be an important asset of<br />
in<strong>for</strong>mation to the users in networking and resources sharing.<br />
7. VTLS Software Support <strong>for</strong> Indian languages<br />
• With its UNICODE support document titles are made available in both Roman<br />
transliterated <strong>for</strong>m and Indian language script.<br />
• The VTLS iPortal has easy to use facility, which requires no programming and<br />
training.<br />
• It supports many languages including right to left languages such as Arabic,etc.<br />
• At the data input stage provides languages code support such as ass- Assamese,<br />
ben - Bengali, etc.<br />
• For Language display, the user can change the language on the screen at all levels<br />
including menu tool bars. There are about twenty languages in the combo box.<br />
• While configuring notice- generating reports, under info station, Honor language<br />
and Honor Address Preference parameters appear in the Report Specific<br />
parameters. Honor language preference is based on the language preference<br />
specified in the patron record, 100 tag subfield 1 and language of the report<br />
configuration.<br />
• MARC labels can be edited, translated into any language.<br />
8. Conclusion<br />
With the onset of the CIIL digital library, the future plan is -<br />
• To act as a clearing house of in<strong>for</strong>mation on all aspects of languages, linguistics<br />
and its related areas.<br />
• Digitization of books in Indian languages<br />
• To trans<strong>for</strong>m the CIIL Digital Library to a Hybrid Library.<br />
