Digital Document Delivery: A Case Study<br />

Abstract<br />

A web based inter library photocopy request system has been implemented at<br />

the <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> Advanced Technology Library, Indore. The features and<br />

functions of the system are described. Based on the evaluation of the system,<br />

this paper reports to share the experiences and modifications carried out in the<br />

system accordingly.<br />

1. Introduction<br />

The <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> Advanced Technology (CAT) library at Indore offers ‘Interlibrary<br />

Loan’ (ILL) service facilitating users to obtain those document/s that are not<br />

available in CAT library. To enhance the ILL facility, web-based request <strong>for</strong>m has<br />

been designed to obtain the requests and <strong>for</strong>ward the same <strong>for</strong> processing to fulfill<br />

the demand. This system has been implemented. A brief description of the features<br />

of the system and its functions are described followed by the report drawn on<br />

evaluating the system.<br />

2. Ill Request Form<br />

A request <strong>for</strong>m <strong>for</strong> the end users to furnish the requisite details of the document/s<br />

has been designed based on based on ISO 10161 Interlibrary Loan Application<br />

Protocol, which defines standard set of messages & <strong>for</strong>mat <strong>for</strong> ILL transactions.<br />

Three separate request <strong>for</strong>ms have been designed, allowing variations in the data<br />

fields <strong>for</strong> different types of publications:<br />

1. Journal Articles<br />

2. Conference Papers<br />

3. Book/Monograph<br />

Java Servlet, Java Scripts & HTML are used in developing the software. To store<br />

the requests and responses, Oracle RDBMS has been used as backend database.<br />

User can login using his/her employee identity number. For security reasons, end<br />

users cannot modify the <strong>for</strong>m. A warning concerning copyright violation is<br />

reproduced on the web-<strong>for</strong>m. Using administrator login, library staff can modify<br />

and send requests to the supplying library.<br />

3. Functions<br />

3.1. User End<br />

The requester per<strong>for</strong>ms the following steps:<br />

1. Access the library homepage on the Intranet.<br />

2. Checks availability of the journal/book in the library holdings list/catalogue<br />
