IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES OF YUZHMORGEOLOGIA<br />

(RUSSIAN FEDERATION)<br />

Mr. Melnik, describing the work done by Yuzhmorgeologia during the<br />

Benthic Impact Experiment (BIE), noted that his organisation had begun its<br />

experiment in 1991, continued it in 1992 with Craig Smith, <strong>and</strong> started a<br />

similar experiment in 1993. This experiment closely resembled those<br />

performed by scientists from Japan, India <strong>and</strong> the Interoceanmetal Joint<br />

Organisation (IOM). The main purpose <strong>of</strong> the experiment was to create a<br />

plume <strong>and</strong> move a huge amount <strong>of</strong> sediment, thereby creating a large<br />

resedimentation event, in order to see the reaction <strong>of</strong> the benthic<br />

community to the resedimentation. This was still too far from real mining<br />

activity because all the manganese nodules remained on the seafloor<br />

rather than being recovered onboard.<br />

From 1991 to 2000 Yuzhmorgeologiya had carried out this study<br />

together with United States contractors in the American-licensed site. In the<br />
