discharge, to the water column. Therefore, chemical parameters in the<br />

water column should preferably be measured at the following levels above<br />

the sediment bottom: 10, 20, 50 <strong>and</strong> 200 metres, <strong>and</strong> 1.2-2 times the<br />

elevation <strong>of</strong> the highest topographic feature in the area; <strong>and</strong> also in the<br />

oxygen-minimum zone, at about the depth <strong>of</strong> the forecasted discharge, <strong>and</strong><br />

at the measurement depths recommended by the Water-Column Working<br />

Group (surface, base <strong>of</strong> the mixed layer <strong>and</strong> within the subsurface<br />

chlorophyll maximum).<br />

The chemical parameters to be measured are given in table 3. In<br />

addition, these parameters should be measured at the same depths as<br />

physical parameters (temperature, salinity, turbidity). Recommended<br />

analytical methods are the st<strong>and</strong>ard, accepted methods, such as those<br />

utilised in the programmes <strong>of</strong> the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS)<br />

<strong>and</strong> the Geochemical Ocean Sections Study (GEOSECS). Sample collection<br />

for the trace metals will require ultraclean techniques.<br />
