Although these protocols may be slightly different from those<br />

required for deep-sea mining, they could be modified for <strong>environmental</strong><br />

impact assessment studies for deep-sea mining. However, none <strong>of</strong> them<br />

includes a protocol for <strong>environmental</strong> parameters in the benthic<br />

environment, which is expected to be affected the most in case <strong>of</strong> deep seabed<br />

mining, as the minerals occur on the surface <strong>of</strong> the seafloor.<br />

2. Procedures suggested by NIO (India)<br />

Outlines <strong>of</strong> procedures adopted or recommended by scientists<br />

working on <strong>environmental</strong> impact assessment <strong>of</strong> deep-sea mining at NIO<br />

are given in the three following tables in this chapter <strong>and</strong> in appendix B at<br />

the end <strong>of</strong> this volume.<br />
