appointments, to get tested, etc.
HIV Prevention & Educational Services
Create a pamphlet with a directory of VCT centers in English, Spanish and Creole
to distribute to the Migrant and mobile populations. It is necessary to ensure that
adequate VCT training is done for healthcare workers. This pamphlet should be
provided with the one on care & treatment services.
Make HIV and AIDS education information more readily available through a
variety of sources – websites, Facebook, media, etc. A reasonable percentage of
the population uses the two cinemas in Antigua, yet no HIV or AIDS prevention
of support messages are shown there. Radio in Spanish is an excellent means to
provide information to the Dominican vulnerable migrants and should be used for
IEC purpose to the targeted population
The instrument used most to make contact, could be the instrument used for
outreach. For example, Short Text Messages (SMS) can be sent to SW’s and
MSM’s with positive messages reminding them to use condoms, get tested, etc.
Selected MSM and SW should be trained to be peer educators, who will further
educate other members of their core group on risk factors, risk reduction
behaviours and empowerment.
Migrant SW and MSM need to be given the necessary support and tools to build
empowerment, which in turn is likely to increase their self-esteem helping them to
make better choices.
