7- Which of your needs as a core group are not being met? The participants did not have a ready answer for this. The principal researcher explained some examples of needs and they stated that they all have a place to sleep and food to eat. They all wished the overseas phone calls on their cell was not so expensive so they could speak with their families more and they also wished that they earned more money, but they did not have too much else to say. In terms of non-material needs, their biggest issue was being misunderstood and looked down on (this means they felt like people saw them as less than others because of the kind of work they do). One girl who was in Antigua the longest stated that a lot of non-CSW women go with married men, so they are no different from them. They even felt they were better since they were not really breaking up anyone’s marriage since the men come and then go the same night. In other words, they had a need not to be stigmatized, but they did not put it in those words. 8- Which agencies do you see trying to reach your core group? The unanimous answer was CHAA only. After being probed about AIDS Secretariat, HHH, Churches or other organizations, they maintained that while 3H did show some interest, only CHAA really went out of their way to reach them where they are. They did say members of church groups have dropped off tracts (religious reading material), but make no effort to communicate with them. 9- Do you have difficulty have friendships with non CSW’s? One person said no, she has non CSW friends and their relationship is fairly good. Three felt like it was too difficult to have non CSW friends. One of those three stated, “I have no time with those women because they think they better than us”. Three said that they don’t really communicate with women outside of their job because the first thing people ask is “what kind of work do you do?” They are fearful of reaching out for fear of how they will be viewed or for fear of rejection. They also said that they don’t have much time to make friends outside of each other because other females are uncomfortable having them around their 161
oyfriends. One participant also said at the end “besides when they get off work is when we preparing to start work”. That was referring to non-CSW women. 10- What kind of family and friend and social support do you have? Four of the participants stated that their co-workers were their greatest source of support because they understood them, knew what they did and accepted them anyway. They could talk about their experiences and borrow condoms from each other. One person stated that her boyfriend was supportive from overseas and she would call, text and bb with him, but he did not know that she was a sex worker in Antigua. Most of the participants said that they sent money home to their families but their families at home had too much of their own stress to support them emotionally and one of the Guyanese participants said that her family thought it was easy being in Antigua and that she had lots of access to US dollars because her mother believed that she was working at a hotel. One of the girls stated that she had a few friends in Antigua as her social support. 11- What ideas and suggestions do you have to improve HIV&AIDS prevention, education, treatment and support in Antigua? The participants were hesitant to answer this question as they did not feel like their suggestions had much weight. They clearly were not empowered about their situation. When they were reassured that their voices will be heard, they ventured their opinions. Free condoms and free medication for people who are HIV positive. Not just the HIV medication, but also for when they were afflicted with opportunistic infections. (Flu and cold was mentioned as well as gynecological issues like yeast infections or urinary tract infections). Counselors for when dancers and sex workers are stressed out. They felt like their challenges were not understood or acknowledged enough. They go through 162
