Design of Survey Tools
The survey form was designed using the Behavioural Surveillance Survey (BSS) method
and was reviewed by members of the consulting team including research expert Julia
Hasbun. A test run was conducted with five (5) interviewees for the purpose of validation
before the forms were ready for full use. Survey forms were designed for MSM and CSW
core groups, for Stakeholder interviews and separate questions were formulated for the 2
CSW, MSM and NGO focus groups. (See appendix for forms)
Data Analysis
As soon as the interviewers completed their surveys, the data was collected, translated as
necessary and entered into the database using Microsoft Excel. The information was then
cross-checked by someone different from the original data entry person (Validation of
data entry). After being checked, the data was then transferred to table form and graphs
and charts were generated where relevant. The data was then interpreted to present the
findings and implications of those findings.
Personnel
The team was comprised of twelve persons, one lead researcher/consultant, one research
assistant, one Spanish speaking interviewer, one exotic dancer interviewer, four MSM
interviewers, two CSW interviewers, one data entry clerk and one translator.
And while the interviewers were all experienced in conducting surveys and working with
the target populations training was still conducted to explain and discuss the purpose of
the project and to emphasize the need for sensitivity and confidentiality.
Ethical Considerations in the Use of Human Subjects
The mapping study was conducted with adherence to the principles that dictate that
human subjects be protected during research.
