The island’s population is estimated to be 86,295 based on the last national census conducted in
2011. Of that total population, it is estimated that at least 30% are migrants, with the most
migrants coming from Jamaica, Guyana, Dominican Republic, Dominica and England
(Immigration Department, 2012). Our net migration rate according to the CIA Fact book is 2.29
migrants for every 1,000 persons which makes us number 35 in the world out of 220 countries.
The primary language spoken in Antigua is English, with others speaking Spanish, Patois and
some French and the literacy rate is listed as 99% (World Bank, 2011). The island is considered
a tourist destination and tourism accountsfor 60% of the GDP. The Gross GDP as of 2011 was
1.3 billion (CIA Factbook, 2012). In terms of the labour force, 82% of the employed persons
work in the service sector, 11% in industry and only 17% in agriculture. The Antigua and
Barbuda travel and tourism sector contributed to 78.5% of the GDP in 2010 and to 84.5% of
country employment.
The island is considered to have an upper middle income in the category of Latin American and
Caribbean developing states.
