At least 60% of the populations reached are MSM’s and CSW’s and a lot of clients are repeats. They complete the agency on their confidentiality, ease of access to services, good customer service and lack of stigma and discrimination and support. Client referrals are mostly made to the NAP, Social Welfare division, Clinical Care Coordinator and Antigua Family Planning Association. Antigua & Barbuda HIV and AIDS Network (ABHAN) Holberton Hospital Compound The Antigua and Barbuda HIV/AIDS Network (ABHAN) was founded in 2007 and is an organization dedicated to educating, empowering and advocating for individuals infected and affected by HIV and AIDS. Their prevention programme focuses on reducing the number of individuals infected with HIV especially targeting the sexual and reproductive health of the most vulnerable groups including women and youth. Some of the services provided include distribution of home based care kits (HBC kits), delivery of cooked meals, distribution of food packages, weekly counselling sessions for members and their families, donation of cooking gas and distribution of condoms. ABHAN has also teamed up with the American University of Antigua (AUA) to form an HIV and AIDS Peer/Buddy Treatment Adherence Programme (PBTAP). The goals of this programme are to recruit and retain patients into treatment and care and ensure that they adhere to their treatment and to deliver a comprehensive package of services including case management leading to decreased risky sexual behaviour, improved immune system functioning and general health improvements. They also conduct peer training three or four times per year and that covers topics like stigma and discrimination, ART’s and opportunistic infections, human rights and confidentiality issues, techniques 57
in navigating the health care system, recruitment of other HIV positive individuals and self-empowerment and about three thousand condoms are distributed annually. There are no special arrangements made for the migrant population and but the charity did have a number of clients which are men who have sex with men (MSMs) Antigua Planned Parenthood Association (APPA) Bishopgate Street St. John’s This agency is one of the most well-known for providing family services. These services include the provision of contraceptives, DNA testing, education, pregnancy tests and other services related to sexual reproductive health (SRH). Their services are offered mainly on the compound and in most cases for a small fee; for example, a condom costs fifty cents. Free services include family life education offered to schools, churches and community organizations. They do not do any particular outreach to the migrant population and no one is asked about their country of origin when they access services. Education about HIV prevention and safe sex is the key thrust of the organization. They are a part of the Caribbean Family Planning Affiliation (CFPA) Women Against Rape (WAR) Redcliffe Street Women Against Rape (WAR) is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) which serves the general population of Antigua offering counselling, education and training, legal referrals and support though its target population is primarily women and families affected by sexual violence and secondarily to the vulnerable. The office is located in Redcliffe Quay and there is also a support network in the urban and rural areas. The director of the organization plays a part in the planning and decision making processes and have made all costs for services free to the population thus, services offered to the migrant population are not affected by their ability or inability to pay. Though the staff has not been formally trained, there is a plan to offer training soon, but 58
