Health, Hope & HIV (3H) Network – pamphlets are given out and sometimes they have support group meetings where information is shared. Caribbean HIV/AIDS alliance (CHAA) – they do outreach and also give out pamphlets and condoms. The animators also talk to them about safe sex practices. Antigua Planned Parenthood Association (APPA) – the participant who mentioned this agency said the staff member didn’t really talk to him but just gave him some written information. AIDS Secretariat –written information, counseling before and after HIV testing 8. Which of your needs as a core group are not being met? The participants felt that they have a need to be more together in unity. They felt that among the core group, they talk about each other too much and there is too much fighting. They also said many of the persons who are MSM’s have multiple partners so they need to be spoken to about that, because that can cause the spread of HIV. They also mentioned that some of the guys go with older men for money and this means they become unfaithful to their partners. Other things mentioned were: ‣ Counseling – some of the younger MSM need counseling to be able to deal with the stigma and discrimination and also with coming out to their families. Some of them need help with self-esteem issues. ‣ Advocacy – they need representation to deal with Immigration, as the Immigration officers are unkind in a more subtle kind of way. 121
‣ Men’s health care clinic – where they can get free condoms and check-ups and deal with whatever health issues they have. ‣ No steady supply of commodities (lubricants) – one participant commented that they need access to these things as without them, there is tearing, which can result in more infections. ‣ Someone said at the last minute they need people to understand them and the frustrations they have to deal with. 9. Which agencies do you find trying to reach this core group? ‣ Health Hope & HIV (3H) Network – this agency provides condoms, holds support groups, gives information and helps with food and other forms of support. Pastor Brotherson is also a good counselor. ‣ Gender Affairs – They provide information and support. ‣ Caribbean HIV/AIDS Alliance (CHAA) – “they provide support by talking to use about safe sex, providing condoms and the staff are helpful” ‣ Women Against Rape (WAR) – “Ms. Wong followed my friend to the hospital and police station after he had been sexually assaulted by an older man. That was very nice of her”. 10. Do you have difficulty have friendships with non MSM’s? “Yes some ‘straight’ guys do not want to be seen with us. They might be friends with us on What’s App or BBM (phone programs) but they don’t want to talk out in public”. “We do get along better with females and they also have some good advice on how to deal with guys”. 122
