9. Do not provide the <strong>in</strong>jured student athlete with food or dr<strong>in</strong>k, unless otherwise <strong>in</strong>dicated by situation,<br />

e.g., diabetes, hypothermia, and dehydration.<br />

10. Stay calm. Speak reassur<strong>in</strong>gly.<br />

11. When ambulance attendants arrive, describe what happened, how it happened and what has been<br />

done. In<strong>for</strong>m them about any related medical problems or past <strong>in</strong>juries of the student athlete, if<br />

known.<br />

12. The teacher/coach should designate an adult to accompany the <strong>in</strong>jured student athlete to the hospital<br />

to help reassure him/her and provide the relevant medical history and <strong>in</strong>jury circumstances to the<br />

physician.<br />

13. The parent/guardian of the <strong>in</strong>jured student must be contacted as soon as possible after the <strong>in</strong>jury.<br />

14. Complete an accident/<strong>in</strong>cident report and file with appropriate board official and school<br />

adm<strong>in</strong>istrator.<br />

15. Establish emergency communication procedures <strong>for</strong> off-site or after school outdoors activities, e.g.,<br />

cellular phone.<br />
