Supervision<br />

• Constant visual supervision is recommended dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>itial practice of contact<br />

skills.<br />

• On-site supervision is recommended follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>itial practice of contact skills<br />

and after all safety concerns have been emphasized.<br />

• In-the-area supervision is recommended <strong>for</strong> practice of non-contact skills.<br />

Instructional Considerations<br />

• Student athletes should receive <strong>in</strong>struction on how to properly adjust and<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> equipment prior to wear<strong>in</strong>g football gear.<br />

• Safe block<strong>in</strong>g and tackl<strong>in</strong>g techniques should be taught and re<strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>ced<br />

throughout the season.<br />

• Each student athlete should have actively participated <strong>in</strong> at least eight practice<br />

days be<strong>for</strong>e play<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> first league game.<br />

• When not <strong>in</strong> use, practice equipment such as block<strong>in</strong>g sleds and bags, should be<br />

kept at a safe distance from practic<strong>in</strong>g student athletes.<br />

• There should be a m<strong>in</strong>imum of 72 hours between games.<br />

• Teachers/coaches should assess heat, humidity and physical condition of student<br />

athletes when plann<strong>in</strong>g practices.<br />

• Down-marker personnel should be tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> safe use of equipment.<br />

Equipment/Facilities<br />

• When issu<strong>in</strong>g equipment, all gear should be fitted properly.<br />

• Football helmets must have the National Operat<strong>in</strong>g Committee on Standards <strong>for</strong><br />

Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) approval seal and warn<strong>in</strong>g label.<br />

• Football helmets and shoulder pads should be <strong>in</strong>spected annually and<br />

reconditioned as determ<strong>in</strong>ed by the manufacturer’s requirements and warranties<br />

through an accredited equipment reconditioner (NOCSAE, NAERA).<br />

• Football helmets should be replaced no later than 10 years from date of<br />

manufacture.<br />

• For all contact situations, the m<strong>in</strong>imum protective equipment that should be<br />

worn <strong>in</strong>cludes: full fit <strong>in</strong>terior mouth guard, properly fitted helmet, suitable<br />

position-specific facemask, shoulder pads, hip-tailbone pads, thigh pads and<br />

knee protection.<br />

• Full padd<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> good condition, should be provided on block<strong>in</strong>g equipment.<br />

• Goalposts must be properly padded.<br />

• Boundary l<strong>in</strong>es should be clearly <strong>in</strong>dicated.<br />

• Suitable cloth<strong>in</strong>g and footwear that satisfies football regulations should be<br />

worn.<br />
