APPENDIX P - UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS RE: BLOOD & BODILY<br />

FLUIDS<br />

Disposable waterproof gloves (latex or v<strong>in</strong>yl) should be worn when <strong>in</strong> contact with blood, blood<br />

products, other body fluids, open wounds or sores (non-<strong>in</strong>tact sk<strong>in</strong>) and items or surfaces soiled with<br />

blood or other body fluids.<br />

Mouthpieces, pocket masks or other ventilation devices should be readily available <strong>in</strong> those sett<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

where the need <strong>for</strong> resuscitation can be anticipated. However, the risk of <strong>in</strong>fection is so slight that no one<br />

should hesitate to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation if such equipment is not available.<br />

Open wounds should be covered prior to competition or practice. If a bleed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>jury occurs dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

competition or practice, the <strong>in</strong>dividual must be removed from the competition until the bleed<strong>in</strong>g has<br />

stopped. The wound should be cleansed with an antiseptic solution and securely covered be<strong>for</strong>e the<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual can return. Should blood appear on the participant’s uni<strong>for</strong>m or equipment, which is exposed<br />

to other participants, the uni<strong>for</strong>m/equipment must be either changed or cleaned be<strong>for</strong>e participation can<br />

resume.<br />

Hands (and any sk<strong>in</strong> surface) contam<strong>in</strong>ated with blood or other body fluids should be washed<br />

thoroughly as soon as practicable. To wash hands, use pla<strong>in</strong> soap and vigorously rub together all<br />

surfaces of lathered hands <strong>for</strong> at least 10 seconds. R<strong>in</strong>se thoroughly under a stream of water. After<br />

treat<strong>in</strong>g an open wound or clean<strong>in</strong>g a blood sta<strong>in</strong>ed surface, gloves should be removed and hands<br />

washed with soapy water be<strong>for</strong>e cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Spills of blood or other body fluids and contam<strong>in</strong>ated surfaces and equipment should be cleaned<br />

promptly with detergent and water, us<strong>in</strong>g disposable towels. The area should then be dis<strong>in</strong>fected with a<br />

bleach solution and left to dry. The bleach solution should be a dilution of household chlor<strong>in</strong>e bleach<br />

mixed one part bleach to n<strong>in</strong>e parts water. The solution must be prepared fresh daily. When us<strong>in</strong>g, wear<br />

gloves to prevent sk<strong>in</strong> irritation. Chemical germicides approved <strong>for</strong> use as hospital dis<strong>in</strong>fectants can also<br />

be used to clean surfaces.<br />

L<strong>in</strong>en and cloth<strong>in</strong>g that have been soiled with blood or other body fluids may be washed with regular<br />

laundry.<br />
