Types of Policies Recommended <strong>for</strong> School Authorities<br />

School authorities* likely have policies <strong>in</strong> place to address student safety <strong>in</strong> various<br />

types of school activities. Many of the policies can impact upon the delivery of<br />

<strong>in</strong>terschool athletic activities. Follow<strong>in</strong>g is a list of policies that a school authority<br />

may have and that if it exists is likely to impact on <strong>in</strong>sterschool athletic activities.<br />

Adm<strong>in</strong>istrators and teacher coaches should review any policies that perta<strong>in</strong> to the<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g issues even if they are not expressly directed at <strong>in</strong>terschool activities. If<br />

these policies do not exist the board or school many consider develop<strong>in</strong>g them. Such<br />

policies <strong>in</strong>clude but are not limited to the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

Emergency Related Policies:<br />

• Fire drills<br />

• Bomb threats<br />

• Emergency measures and equipment<br />

Medical Related Policies:<br />

• The storage of and occasional or regular adm<strong>in</strong>istration of medication or<br />

prescription/non-prescription drugs <strong>for</strong> illness or chronic conditions<br />

• Medical treatment of the medically fragile<br />

• Emergency medical treatment of students<br />

Transportation Related Policies:<br />

• Student conduct on school buses<br />

• School bus safety precautions<br />

• Field trips<br />

• Transportation <strong>in</strong> private vehicles<br />

• Use of 16-seat vans <strong>for</strong> transportation<br />

Other Polices:<br />

• Supervision of students dur<strong>in</strong>g school activities, extracurricular activities, dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

recesses and school authorized transportation<br />

• Ma<strong>in</strong>tenance of school build<strong>in</strong>gs and grounds<br />

• Community use of school facilities--so that hazards are not left after facility use<br />

• Student conduct<br />

• Student dress, especially <strong>for</strong> dangerous activities, such as work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> laboratories<br />

and with mach<strong>in</strong>ery<br />

• Off-site education programs<br />

• Inspection policies <strong>for</strong> equipment.<br />

• Inclement weather<br />

Communication of Expectations<br />

School authorities should consult with district adm<strong>in</strong>istrators, school staff, athletic<br />

directors, teachers/coaches and <strong>in</strong>surance companies to review current policies<br />

regard<strong>in</strong>g safety guidel<strong>in</strong>es <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>terschool athletics. The protective value of safety<br />

policies is important to the development of safe programm<strong>in</strong>g. School authorities<br />

should ensure that they have clearly stated their expectations of super<strong>in</strong>tendents and<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>cipals so that:<br />

• Certified first aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) support, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

use of Automatic Electronic Defibrilators (AEDs), is accessible as appropriate to<br />

all supervisory and teach<strong>in</strong>g/coach<strong>in</strong>g staff.<br />
