POLICY FOR THE ALBERTA SCHOOLS’<br />

ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION<br />

This is the ASAA Policy <strong>for</strong> the 2011/12 school year. Please check the ASAA website www.asaa.ca <strong>for</strong><br />

SECTION I - CODE OF ETHICS<br />

Adults who work with students <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>terscholastic activities should present a positive role model <strong>for</strong> them<br />

to emulate. Students who represent a school <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>terscholastic activities must be creditable school<br />

citizens.<br />

The Association recognizes that the school adm<strong>in</strong>istration is responsible <strong>for</strong> all athletic programs and the<br />

conduct of all school representatives, whatever the level and location of the competition. In recognition<br />

of this authority and responsibility, the Association presents the follow<strong>in</strong>g general guidel<strong>in</strong>es<br />

FAIR PLAY AND SPORTSMANSHIP<br />

All competitions must be conducted with a high standard of courtesy, fair play and sportsmanship. All<br />

those <strong>in</strong>volved share this responsibility.<br />

A. Coaches<br />

The coaches must demonstrate qualities of courtesy and good sportsmanship. These are evidenced<br />

by proper acceptance of officials’ judgment, positive encouragement of player per<strong>for</strong>mance and<br />

bench behaviour.<br />

B. Athletes<br />

Athletes must demonstrate qualities of courtesy and good sportsmanship by proper acceptance of<br />

officials’ judgment and by show<strong>in</strong>g proper respect <strong>for</strong> oppos<strong>in</strong>g athletes as well as <strong>for</strong> teammates<br />

C. Cheerleaders<br />

Cheerleaders must demonstrate courtesy and good sportsmanship by the appropriateness and<br />

timel<strong>in</strong>ess of the cheers they lead, respect <strong>for</strong> the other cheerleaders and athletes, and their attempts<br />

at effective crowd control<br />

D. Spectators<br />

a. Spectators, both student and adult, must demonstrate courtesy and good sportsmanship by<br />

positive cheers of encouragement <strong>for</strong> their team, not aga<strong>in</strong>st the oppos<strong>in</strong>g team. This is<br />

evidenced by the absence of boo<strong>in</strong>g and vulgarities. Spectators must also show proper<br />

acceptance of officials’ judgment. Artificial noisemakers are not permitted dur<strong>in</strong>g prov<strong>in</strong>cial<br />

championship tournaments/events. These noisemakers may <strong>in</strong>clude but are not limited to: air<br />

horns, cow bells, plastic tube horns, garbage can lids, etc. The prov<strong>in</strong>cial championship host<br />

shall have the authority to eject from the competition facility <strong>in</strong>dividuals who, follow<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

warn<strong>in</strong>g, refuse to comply with this requirement.<br />

b. Eviction <strong>for</strong> Inappropriate Language and/or Behavior<br />

The Executive Committee or its host/designated representative shall have authority to direct any<br />

person to immediately leave any premises or venue host<strong>in</strong>g any ASAA sanctioned event if that<br />

person:<br />

1. exhibits rude or abusive behavior to any other person<br />

2. uses vulgar, obscene or abusive language and/or gestures<br />
