Cultural Dress<br />

• Where cultural dress presents a safety concern, modifications to the dress<br />

should be considered.<br />

Jewelry<br />

• Jewelry, particularly hang<strong>in</strong>g jewelry should not be worn.<br />

• Jewelry that cannot be removed (e.g., medical alert identification,<br />

religious/cultural jewelry), and presents a safety concern, must be covered with<br />

tape to reduce chances of entanglement.<br />

• Dur<strong>in</strong>g game situations there may be rules that call <strong>for</strong> a higher standard of<br />

care, e.g., removal of jewelry. Situation-specific guidel<strong>in</strong>es are addressed on<br />

activity pages.<br />

Hair<br />

• A suitable device to keep hair from obstruct<strong>in</strong>g vision should be used, e.g.,<br />

elastic.<br />

• Devices used to tie back long hair should not present a safety concern. Metal or<br />

other hard objects should not be used.<br />

Orthotic Devices<br />

• For all contact <strong>in</strong>terschool athletic practices and competitions, exposed orthotic<br />

devices, which present a safety concern to other student athletes, should be soft<br />

or padded, and such devices should be approved by the official prior to the<br />

game commenc<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Emergency Equipment<br />

• An appropriate first aid kit must be stocked and readily accessible. Use<br />

Appendix O <strong>for</strong> appropriate first aid kit contents.<br />

• A copy of the school’s Emergency Action Plan (Appendix L) should be<br />

accessible and readily available.<br />

• Location of AED (if available) should be posted.<br />

• When activities are offered off campus, an appropriate portable first aid kit must<br />

be available <strong>for</strong> all activities.<br />

• A telephone <strong>for</strong> use <strong>in</strong> an emergency should be available and accessible <strong>for</strong> all<br />

<strong>in</strong>terschool athletic activities/facilities.<br />

• Emergency transportation should be available.<br />

• A tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>dividual responsible <strong>for</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g first aid, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the use of<br />

AEDs, to <strong>in</strong>jured student athletes should be present dur<strong>in</strong>g the entire activity.<br />

• Teachers/coaches should refer to Board and other policies that address blood<br />

and bodily fluid procedures, Universal Precautions Re: Blood and Body Fluids<br />

(Appendix O), sport govern<strong>in</strong>g body, association regulations.<br />
