Transportation by Motor Vehicle (cont.)<br />

o Licens<strong>in</strong>g of Driver<br />

- Ensure drivers are appropriately licensed <strong>for</strong> the vehicle(s) and<br />

number of passengers <strong>in</strong>volved.<br />

- See sample Volunteer Driver Authorization Policy Form<br />

(Appendix F).<br />

o Condition of Vehicle:<br />

- Ensure the vehicle has been checked <strong>for</strong> appropriate operat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

condition, e.g., lights, tires, brakes, and fluids.<br />

- Ensure proper storage of gear with<strong>in</strong> vehicle.<br />

o Procedures dur<strong>in</strong>g Travel<br />

- If a number of vehicles are be<strong>in</strong>g used, make sure each driver has<br />

a road or sketch map and time schedule of the <strong>in</strong>tended<br />

rendezvous po<strong>in</strong>t(s).<br />

- Ensure that participants are properly seated <strong>in</strong> the vehicle and<br />

seat belts are used when available. Ensure all rules as set out <strong>in</strong><br />

current prov<strong>in</strong>cial legislation are adhered to.<br />

- Establish and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> safety procedures <strong>for</strong> all vehicles,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g safety education, load<strong>in</strong>g and unload<strong>in</strong>g, seat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

supervision and emergency procedures.<br />

- Establish and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> procedures <strong>for</strong> student athletes us<strong>in</strong>g their<br />

own vehicles to attend physical education or <strong>in</strong>terscholastic<br />

activities, and parents driv<strong>in</strong>g student athletes to various<br />

activities.<br />

o W<strong>in</strong>ter Travel<br />

- For w<strong>in</strong>ter use, be confident that the vehicle will start <strong>in</strong> cold<br />

weather or establish a backup plan.<br />

- Check <strong>for</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter driv<strong>in</strong>g conditions and check that proposed<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ter travel routes are plowed on a regular basis or that you can<br />

have them cleared <strong>for</strong> your purposes.<br />

o Park<strong>in</strong>g<br />

- Park well out of the way of through traffic and back <strong>in</strong>to park<strong>in</strong>g<br />

spots. This reduces the likelihood of becom<strong>in</strong>g trapped or stuck<br />

due to snow or muddy conditions.<br />

Equipment/Facilities <strong>for</strong> Off-site Activities<br />

• Teacher/coach should ensure that commercial or other facilities that are used<br />

con<strong>for</strong>m to safety standards and are free from hazards.<br />

• Teacher/coach should know the location of the AED, if available.<br />

• Concerns about potentially dangerous situations should be reported to<br />

appropriate authorities.<br />

• When activities are offered off-site, an appropriate portable first aid kit must be<br />

readily accessible.<br />
