Supervision<br />

• On-site supervision is recommended dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>itial <strong>in</strong>struction.<br />

• In-the-area supervision is recommended follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>itial skill <strong>in</strong>struction and<br />

after all safety concerns have been emphasized.<br />

Instructional Considerations<br />

• Umpire should wear a mask and chest pad.<br />

• Student athletes should be taught to lay down or drop the bat after hitt<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />

to not release it dur<strong>in</strong>g the follow-through of the sw<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Non-field<strong>in</strong>g student athletes should stand well back of the batter’s box or<br />

beh<strong>in</strong>d a screen or fence. (Keep f<strong>in</strong>gers away from the screen.)<br />

• Batters should be taught to use proper grip (not cross-handed).<br />

• Appropriate slid<strong>in</strong>g techniques should be taught to m<strong>in</strong>imize risk of <strong>in</strong>jury.<br />

• Head first slid<strong>in</strong>g techniques should not be allowed.<br />

• A commit l<strong>in</strong>e should be used at home plate.<br />

Equipment/Facilities<br />

• Bats should be free of cracks and have a proper grip.<br />

• Alum<strong>in</strong>um bats should have adequate grip.<br />

• Backcatcher should be <strong>in</strong> full protective equipment, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a mask with<br />

throat protector, chest and sh<strong>in</strong> protector.<br />

• Catchers should wear all equipment specified under Softball Canada/Baseball<br />

Canada rules.<br />

• Age-appropriate regulation softball should be used.<br />

• If us<strong>in</strong>g a regulation softball, batters and base runners should wear helmets, and<br />

fielders should wear gloves.<br />

• Batter and runners should wear helmet.<br />

• Bases should be properly secured, not<strong>in</strong>g that bases secured <strong>in</strong>to the ground<br />

with metal pegs can cause ankle/leg <strong>in</strong>juries when slid<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Double bag should be used at first base.<br />

• Metal and compound cleats must not be worn.<br />

• Molded baseball cleats or runn<strong>in</strong>g shoes may be worn.<br />
