Supervision<br />

• On-site supervision is recommended follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>itial skill <strong>in</strong>struction and after<br />

all safety concerns have been emphasized.<br />

Instructional Considerations<br />

• Skills should be taught <strong>in</strong> proper progression, i.e., should progress from parterre<br />

“down” to “stand<strong>in</strong>g” techniques.<br />

• Warm-up activities should emphasize condition<strong>in</strong>g and flexibility.<br />

• Student athletes should be <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>med of rules perta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to illegal holds/techniques.<br />

• Student athletes should not use the follow<strong>in</strong>g illegal holds:<br />

o Full Nelson<br />

o West Po<strong>in</strong>t Ride (t-bar)<br />

o Full suplay, front suplay, front salto and stand<strong>in</strong>g firemans’ carry and throws<br />

<strong>in</strong>itiated by a back bend<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Student athletes should wrestle with partners of similar weight and/or strength.<br />

• Length of bouts should comply with league or zone regulations.<br />

• F<strong>in</strong>gernails should be closely trimmed.<br />

• Student athletes should have full or no facial hair.<br />

• Student athletes may referee under the supervision of the teacher/coach <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>terschool athletic activity.<br />

• Student athletes with communicable sk<strong>in</strong> conditions must not wrestle.<br />

• Student athletes should be taught the benefits of wear<strong>in</strong>g headgear.<br />

• Motion where grand amplitude po<strong>in</strong>ts are awarded.<br />

• Body pierc<strong>in</strong>g jewellery should be removed if it could come <strong>in</strong> contact with the<br />

opponent.<br />

Equipment/Facilities<br />

• Wrestl<strong>in</strong>g mats or general utility mats should be used::<br />

o Ensolite 3.8 cm (1 ½ ”), 3.1 cm (1 ¼ ”), or 2.5 cm (1”);<br />

o Trocellen 5.1 cm (2”);<br />

o Ethefoam 3.8 cm (1 1/2”);<br />

o Sarneige 3.8 cm (1 1/2”); -mats of equivalent compaction rat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• Mat surfaces should be checked and cleaned with bleach prior to use. (See<br />

Appendix P).<br />

• Mats should be attached together or aligned so separation does not occur.<br />

• Suitable clearance should be allowed from the edge of wrestl<strong>in</strong>g area to the<br />

surround<strong>in</strong>g walls; if clearance from wrestl<strong>in</strong>g area is less than 2 m (6’ 6”), walls<br />

should be padded.<br />

• Mouth guards must be worn. Wrestlers with orthodontic devices should use<br />

appropriate protection.<br />

• Eyeglasses should not be worn <strong>in</strong> wrestl<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Suitable cloth<strong>in</strong>g should be worn, i.e., appropriately sized s<strong>in</strong>glets.<br />

• Wrestl<strong>in</strong>g shoes or appropriate footwear must be worn, e.g., no sharp edges, lace<br />

tips.<br />
