The follow<strong>in</strong>g sections must also be consulted: All <strong>Interschool</strong> Activities,<br />

Outdoor Activities, Water-based Activities, Off-site Activities.<br />

Supervision<br />

• Constant visual supervision by a certified NLS Lifeguard is required dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the swimm<strong>in</strong>g portion.<br />

• Constant visual supervision is recommended dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>itial skill <strong>in</strong>struction.<br />

• In-the-area supervision is recommended <strong>for</strong> cycl<strong>in</strong>g and runn<strong>in</strong>g follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>itial skill <strong>in</strong>struction and after all safety concerns have been emphasized.<br />

Instructional Considerations<br />

• Student athletes should tra<strong>in</strong> with a partner <strong>in</strong> all three events.<br />

• A record of student athletes runn<strong>in</strong>g and cycl<strong>in</strong>g, and the route they will be<br />

travel<strong>in</strong>g should be left <strong>in</strong> the school with the appropriate staff.<br />

• Student athletes should be made aware of the value of wear<strong>in</strong>g wetsuits to<br />

prevent hypothermia.<br />

• Student athletes should be made aware of the importance of eye protection <strong>for</strong><br />

swimm<strong>in</strong>g, cycl<strong>in</strong>g and runn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Student athletes should not use audio devices dur<strong>in</strong>g practice and must not use<br />

them dur<strong>in</strong>g competition.<br />

• Prior to giv<strong>in</strong>g athletes access to deep water (above chest height) <strong>for</strong> swimm<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

student athletes must be able to meet the Swim to Survive Standard©, a<br />

sequence of three skills: roll <strong>in</strong>to deep water, tread water <strong>for</strong> 1 m<strong>in</strong>ute, and swim<br />

50 m (Appendix W).<br />

Equipment/Facilities<br />

• Adequate fluid stations should be made available <strong>for</strong> student athletes dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

competition.<br />

• Correctly fitt<strong>in</strong>g approved bicycle helmets must be worn, i.e., CSA, ASTM, CE,<br />

Snell or CPSC<br />

• Regular <strong>in</strong>spection of bicycles should be done to ensure that they are <strong>in</strong> safe<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g order prior to use.<br />

• Bicycle size should be appropriate <strong>for</strong> the student athlete.<br />

• Bicycles must be <strong>in</strong>spected by a designated person to ensure that they are <strong>in</strong><br />

safe work<strong>in</strong>g order prior to competition.<br />

• Bath<strong>in</strong>g suits and/or wet suits should be worn <strong>for</strong> swimm<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Teacher/coach should choose routes carefully <strong>in</strong> terms of length, road surface,<br />

and frequency or speed of traffic dur<strong>in</strong>g practices.<br />

• Traffic should be controlled dur<strong>in</strong>g competition.<br />
