sport<strong>in</strong>g activities are categorized as either low, medium or high<br />

risk. This is done <strong>in</strong> consideration of their potential<br />

<strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>juries with severe consequences, level of physical contact,<br />

speed of action, equipment required, and supervision<br />

required.<br />

<strong>in</strong>cludes school boards or funded accredited private schools and<br />

charter schools.<br />

the oversee<strong>in</strong>g of an activity <strong>for</strong> regulation or direction. All<br />

facilities, equipment and activities have <strong>in</strong>herent risks, but<br />

the more effectively they are supervised, the safer they become.<br />

Category of supervision <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

• “constant visual” supervision means that the teacher/coach is<br />

physically present, watch<strong>in</strong>g the activity <strong>in</strong> question. Only<br />

one activity requir<strong>in</strong>g “constant visual” supervision can take<br />

place while other activities are go<strong>in</strong>g on.<br />

• “on-site” supervision entails teacher/coach presence but not<br />

necessarily constantly view<strong>in</strong>g one specific activity.<br />

Momentary presence <strong>in</strong> adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g rooms to the gymnasium is<br />

considered part of on-site supervision.<br />

• “<strong>in</strong>-the-area” supervision means that the teacher/coach could<br />

be <strong>in</strong> the gymnasium while another activity is tak<strong>in</strong>g place <strong>in</strong><br />

an area adjacent to the gymnasium. For “<strong>in</strong>-the-area”<br />

supervision, the teacher/coach must be readily accessible and<br />

at least one of the follow<strong>in</strong>g criteria must be <strong>in</strong> place:<br />

teacher/coach is circulat<strong>in</strong>g; location of teacher/coach is<br />

known; teacher/coach is visible.<br />

the first stage of an activity program done to prepare the body<br />

<strong>for</strong> more susta<strong>in</strong>ed activity and to reduce the chance of<br />

<strong>in</strong>jury.<br />
