Supervision<br />

• In-the-area supervision is recommended follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>itial skill <strong>in</strong>struction and<br />

after all safety concerns have been emphasized.<br />

• Attendance should be taken be<strong>for</strong>e and after each practice/competition.<br />

Instructional Considerations<br />

• Student athletes should be <strong>in</strong>structed <strong>in</strong> basic road safety.<br />

• Teachers/coaches should monitor weekly distance <strong>in</strong>creases of student athletes<br />

to avoid over tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• When choos<strong>in</strong>g a course, attention should be given to:<br />

o temperature of the day;<br />

o length of time <strong>in</strong> sun;<br />

o previous tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and length of preparation.<br />

• Student athletes should be coached <strong>in</strong> strategies that enhance safety with<br />

“crowded” starts.<br />

• Teacher/coach should discourage use of energy dr<strong>in</strong>ks.<br />

Equipment/Facilities<br />

• Teachers/coaches should familiarize student athletes with the route or course<br />

be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>in</strong>itial attempt, e.g., notice of areas to approach with caution.<br />

• Precautions should be taken to avoid busy <strong>in</strong>tersections as part of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

route.<br />

• Start and f<strong>in</strong>ish area should provide a wide flat area.<br />

• The competition routes <strong>in</strong> cross country runn<strong>in</strong>g should have marshals stationed<br />

throughout.<br />

• All gate and funnel markers should be set <strong>in</strong> a safe manner.<br />

• Student athletes should be advised not to use audio devices with earphones<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g practice and must not use them dur<strong>in</strong>g competition.<br />
