APPENDIX S - Suggested Criteria For Non-Teacher Coaches<br />

It is recommended that non-teacher coaches be accompanied by a teacher supervisor at all times. For<br />

any activity that leads to, or <strong>in</strong>cludes, an ASAA prov<strong>in</strong>cial championship, the ASAA supervision policy<br />

must be followed (see Appendix Q).<br />

School authorities should consider the follow<strong>in</strong>g prior to engag<strong>in</strong>g the services of a non-teacher coach.<br />

• Applicant completes an application <strong>for</strong>m. (See Appendix G)<br />

• Applicant supplies two references.<br />

• Applicant demonstrates coach<strong>in</strong>g expertise. For higher risk sports, this may be derived from one of<br />

the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

1. ASAA’s Fundamentals of Coach<strong>in</strong>g onl<strong>in</strong>e course: www.asaawecoach.ca<br />

a. Supplementary recommended courses at the same site <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

i. Teach<strong>in</strong>g and Model<strong>in</strong>g Behaviour<br />

ii. Engag<strong>in</strong>g Effectively with Parents<br />

iii.Concussion <strong>in</strong> Sport: what you need to know.<br />

More courses are <strong>in</strong> development.<br />

2. Full certification (theory, technical, practical) under the National Coach<strong>in</strong>g Certification Program<br />

to at least Level 1, or equivalent <strong>in</strong> the new NCCP program (sport specific to <strong>in</strong>terschool activity<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g coached).<br />

• Attendance at a relevant cl<strong>in</strong>ic or workshop and/or completion of an ASAA onl<strong>in</strong>e course with<strong>in</strong> the<br />

last three years;<br />

• Canadian School Sport Federation Coach<strong>in</strong>g Module<br />

• National Federation of State High School Associations Fundamental of Coach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• Certification or equivalent <strong>in</strong> the specific <strong>in</strong>terschool athletic activity;<br />

• Attendance at a relevant cl<strong>in</strong>ic or workshop with<strong>in</strong> the last three years;<br />

• Past experience as a competitor or coach <strong>in</strong> that <strong>in</strong>terschool athletic activity.<br />

• Successful applicant must agree to a crim<strong>in</strong>al record check.<br />

• Applicant agrees to a process <strong>for</strong> monitor<strong>in</strong>g of his/her coach<strong>in</strong>g activities, e.g., seasonal review.<br />

• Applicant agrees to a process <strong>for</strong> resolv<strong>in</strong>g issues accompanied by appropriate discipl<strong>in</strong>ary action by<br />

the school and/or school authority.<br />

• Applicant agrees to abide by all relevant policies and procedures.<br />

• Applicant undergoes an orientation session with the school pr<strong>in</strong>cipal or designate to: review<br />

coach<strong>in</strong>g philosophy of school; outl<strong>in</strong>e school policies with respect to academic eligibility; highlight<br />

expected conduct of teacher/coach and code of behaviour <strong>for</strong> student athletes; clarify school policies<br />

with respect to supervision and travel.<br />

• Applicant agrees to attend a pre-season coach<strong>in</strong>g meet<strong>in</strong>g of school and/or association<br />

teachers/coaches, if requested.<br />

• Applicant agrees to communicate regularly with the school pr<strong>in</strong>cipal or designate.<br />
