manuals do not exist. Sabita has
recognised this and will be
updating selected manuals and
also re-shooting its video testing
series onto DVD format. These
efforts have received a further
boost from CAPSA,
which has allocated a
portion of its surplus
funds towards the
updating of Sabita
manuals and audio
visual aids. Below is a
summary of the current
status of the review
process now underway
on selected Sabita
manuals and audio
visuals:
Manual 2 – Bituminous
binders for road
construction and
maintenance: The
fourth edition of this
manual is currently under review
and has been expanded to
incorporate information on the
constitution and rheology of
bitumen. The manual contains
updated information on
specifications, testing
and HSE issues for
binders.
Manual 5 – Guidelines
for the manufacture
and construction of hot
mix asphalt: An expert
group has been
appointed to review the
contents of the manual
with the purpose of
incorporating the latest
developments in HMA
manufacture and
Manual 2: Bituminous
binders for road
construction and
maintenance.
Manual 22: Hot mix
paving in adverse
weather
paving into the second edition.
Manual 10 – Appropriate
standards for bituminous
surfacings: An inception study has
been done to determine the scope
of work required to update this
manual. A proposal is
being considered to
finance further research
into incorporating latest
developments on
labour based
techniques for the
construction and
maintenance of low
volume roads.
Manual 16 – Economic
analysis of short term
rehabilitation (REACT):
A decision has been
taken to finance the
upgrading of the
original REACT program
from a DOS to Windows
operating system, ultimately for
incorporation into the revised
TRH12 which is being funded by
SANRAL. This software is a vital
tool for analysing the impact of
timely pavement maintenance and
rehabilitation at a
project level.
Manual 19 – Technical
guidelines for the
specification and design
of bitumen rubber
asphalt wearing
courses: The second
edition has already
been reviewed and is
awaiting finalisation of
the TG1 specification
for bitumen rubber
binders before going to
print.
