leadership. The recent advent
of a high tech, single
pass, surface dressing
machine by Tarfix (Pty)
Ltd now offers a wide
array of new possibilities
in road surface seals.
Figure 1 highlights the major
technical differences between the
two systems, of which the most
notable is the variability in the
time between the contact of the
stone with the binder in the
conventional system.
Developed in France, and
now used internationally, this
new method of road
surfacing allows for the
simultaneous application of
the binder and the aggregate
in a single pass. In
comparing this method with
the traditional two pass
system, it soon becomes
very apparent that the latter
has a number of inherent
limitations which are
overcome when using the
single pass system.
