Manual 28 –Acceptance criteria for
the design and use of thin layer
asphalt (ACTLA): The purpose of
this manual is to encapsulate the
findings from research carried out
on developing protocols for the
design and quality control of thin
layer asphalt wearing courses. It
is aimed at the use of
thin layer HMA on low
volume roads such as
those in residential
areas, where the
environmental
conditions differ from
those of highways.
Manual 29 –
Certification of binder
distributors: A draft
guideline, intended to
replace TRH1 has been compiled
on the requirements for certifying
a binder distributor for spraying
binders to. The publication of this
manual, replacing TRH 1, will take
place as soon as the new binder
calibration system involving the
outsourcing of the certification
process to a third party is
implemented by the provinces.
Dissemination
The intention is that all these new
manuals will be available on the
Sabita website, www.sabita.co.za
in PDF format at no cost. Similarly
the electronic copies of these
manuals will be placed on CDs for
distribution at no cost to
Students' CD
engineering students at
universities and universities of
technology. Hard copies will still
be printed and sold to cover
publication costs.
All these efforts in updating best
practice publications are aimed at
partnering with government and
assisting, where, possible, with
the transfer of knowledge to new
entrants into the industry. Our
efforts are further augmented
through our
association with the
Asphalt Academy
(AsAc) and the Society
for Asphalt Technology
(SAT). Both AsAc and
SAT are instrumental
in disseminating
information through
seminars and
workshops. AsAc's
training courses are
aimed at educating
practitioners on the latest
technology in the blacktop
industry, while SAT hosts
workshops where information is
shared and debated with its
members on new technological
developments.
AsAc also captures best practice
through the publication of
manuals, known as Technical
Guidelines (TG), which have the
wider input of all stakeholders in
the roads industry. The RPF Task
Group on modified binders is
currently reviewing the technical
guidelines on The use of modified
bituminous binders in road
construction (TG1) and the second
edition is expected to be published
in April.
