Foreword
We are proud to bring you the 2007 digest publication. Great effort has
been made to ensure that we cover a wide spectrum of topical and
relevant issues, ranging from the latest developments in product
technology to socio-economic issues which all have a bearing on the
design and use of bituminous materials. This is an industry publication
supported by local practitioners, and we are very grateful for the
contributions made by those authors who have generously shared their
time, knowledge and expertise.
The intention of the Digest has always been to offer practitioners a
vehicle through which they can provide an insight into new
developments which could impact and shape the future of our industry.
We trust that we have achieved this and that readers will gain a new
understanding of the current status of our industry, and be encouraged
to embrace innovation and implement new developments within your
own organisations.
The construction industry in South Africa is experiencing unprecedented
growth after many years of under spending on infrastructure provision
and preservation. This changed scenario presents a new set of
challenges to our resource base, with a resultant increase in demand for
skills and materials. Some of the articles written provide insight into
these problems, and a vision of how some of the challenges are being
addressed. For ease of reading the articles have been grouped into four
sections namely: Industry Overview, Education and Training,
Innovation and lastly Best Practice.
We trust that you will enjoy reading this edition of the Digest and find it
as enlightening and interesting as previous editions.
