• The Eastern Region held a
highly successful seminar on
the interpretation of asphalt
test results, as well as the
use of the Bailey Method as a
means of determining
behavioral aspects of
aggregate as part of an HMA
design. Another seminar was
held in this region to discuss
the pros and cons of asphalt
reinforcement;
• The Southern and Eastern
regions held
technology
exchange
feed-back
sessions where
various
delegates to
the ICAP
conference in
Canada shared
their new
knowledge and
experiences;
• The Southern
and Central
regions held
successful,
well attended
workshops on
the current status of Ultra
Thin Friction Courses.
Although individuals from the
client body sector (both members
and non-members) do often
attend SAT functions, we would
like to see attendance numbers
increase in future. SAT provides
excellent networking opportunities
and is an ideal discussion forum
for all individual role players in the
industry. The council will
proactively be encouraging local
authorities to support their staff in
attending future meetings.
Our aim is to
develop and
enhance our status
as a Learned
Society and to
position SAT
locally and
internationally
as a reputable
organisation
It is pleasing to note the improved
attendance at seminars in the
Central Region, which recorded
the highest number of delegates.
While the asphalt industry in KZN
is simmering down somewhat
compared with the rest of the
country, it is encouraging to note
the ever-increasing number of
emerging consultants and
contractors who are attending SAT
seminars. This will now become a
key focus area of
SAT and all
practitioners
involved with the
emerging contractor
and consultant
market are urged to
encourage them to
attend seminars
and eventually join
as members of the
Society.
Most importantly, I
can proudly
announce that SAT
is now financially
secure and healthy,
and our financial
woes are thankfully a thing of the
past, due mainly to concerted
efforts by the Council (more
especially the regional
chairpersons).
However, this does not entitle us
to relax or to rest on our laurels.
We now have the opportunity to
grow the Society and improve on
our current success.
Our aim is to develop and enhance
our status as a Learned Society
and to position SAT locally and
internationally as a reputable
