Robotics and Control: The applications and development of robotics in
the fields of deep-ocean exploration and aerospace manufacturing

Abstract
Recently, robotic systems have played important roles in the fields of deep-ocean exploration and
aerospace manufacturing. For example, (a) the underwater robot with the ability of dynamic perception
and understanding can smoothly accomplish humanoid intelligent behaviors in underwater detection; (b)
the flexible industrial robot is always required to assemble numerous fragile optical components of large
weight, large size, and different specifications for building the large laser equipments; (c) the industrial
robot with broad moving ranges and heavy loads need to operate the aircraft metal components with
complex surfaces of high precision and accuracy.
By analyzing the technological bottleneck in the above fields, and exploring the basic and critical scientific
problems, this workshop is expected to provide some useful information for the further development
of robot in these special applications.

Biography of Chair
Hong Qiao, awarded the Distinguished Young Scholar from the National Natural Science
Funds of China, currently serves as the “One Hundred Talents Program” Professor of
Chinese Academy of Sciences. She was a Research Assistant Professor and Assistant
Professor with City University of Hong Kong from 1997 to 2002. From 2002 to 2004, she
was a Lecturer with the School of Informatics, University of Manchester, and had been
awarded as Outstanding Young Researcher. In 2004, she joined the Chinese Academy
of Sciences through the “Overseas Talented Researchers Plan”.
Professor Hong Qiao has published more than 60 papers in international journals, including over 20
papers in IEEE Transactions, ASME, Pattern Recognition, and has also published more than 60 papers in
international conference proceedings. More than 40 of her journal papers she is with the first or second
author’s identity. She is currently the Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and
Cybernetics-Part B. She is also the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Acta Automatica Sincia.
Professor Hong Qiao has taken charge of or participated in 9 national projects since she came back
