employee handbook<br />
Paternity Leave: All fathers employed by the <strong>Hospital</strong> are entitled <strong>to</strong><br />
three days of special leave with pay around the time of the birth or<br />
adoption of a child.<br />
Compassionate Leave: The <strong>Hospital</strong> understands that at times of<br />
bereavement an Employee may need <strong>to</strong> take time off from work.<br />
Compassionate leave may be granted in respect of a spouse or an<br />
immediate relative. While there is no au<strong>to</strong>matic entitlement <strong>to</strong> staff for<br />
compassionate leave the <strong>Hospital</strong> will endeavour <strong>to</strong> accommodate<br />
such leave where possible.<br />
<strong>St</strong>udy Leave/ Exam Leave: Employees pursuing approved courses<br />
may be granted study leave for each academic year of the course.<br />
Employees sitting exams directly related <strong>to</strong> courses approved by the<br />
<strong>Hospital</strong> may be granted examination leave. Please refer <strong>to</strong> Section 6<br />
(Employee Development) of this Handbook for further information on<br />
this area.<br />
Leave of Absence (Career Break): Career Breaks can be granted for<br />
a period of not less than one year and a maximum of five years.<br />
Career Breaks are granted for the following reasons only:<br />
• Domestic reasons.<br />
• Educational purposes.<br />
• Foreign travel.<br />
An Employee’s application may be refused where it is considered that<br />
the granting of a Career Break would have a detrimental effect on<br />
the service. Applications for a Career Break must be made at least<br />
three months in advance of the intended Career Break.<br />
