Skill 1 Planning the passage into the marine district Duration: 120 h<br />
Module 1<br />
Passage plan<br />
Component 1 At the conclusion of training, the candidate will be capable of Duration: 9 h<br />
gathering data from documentation.<br />
Training environment<br />
In the classroom and independently:<br />
• on the basis of documentation referring to the marine district, such as sailing directions,<br />
sector meteorological guide, river climatological charts, and other appropriate charts.<br />
CONTENT<br />
1. Reviewing boundaries of the marine district<br />
established by regulations.<br />
2. Types of vessels that sail in the marine<br />
district: freighters, container ships, tankers,<br />
RO-RO, passenger vessels, military vessels,<br />
coasting vessels, ferries, pleasure craft, etc.<br />
3. Location and schedule of ferries sailing<br />
between shores of the marine district.<br />
4. Small craft:<br />
– location of marinas and small craft<br />
sailing in the marine district;<br />
– their approximate movements.<br />
5. Weather conditions:<br />
– specifics of the marine district;<br />
– factors that can cause ice formation<br />
on upper works: temperature, wind,<br />
ship’s position in the river;<br />
– locations with micro-climates.<br />
SUGGESTED METHODS<br />
Instructor<br />
• Introduce module and the five targeted<br />
components. Explain importance of<br />
thoroughly memorizing local knowledge.<br />
This module will therefore require several<br />
hours of individual study. Working on blank<br />
charts is the best way of memorizing data.<br />
• Using an audio-visual or multimedia<br />
document, introduce specifics of navigating<br />
in the marine district and among small craft.<br />
Ask candidates to identify what action<br />
should be taken in various cases.<br />
Candidates<br />
• On the basis of available documentation,<br />
note:<br />
– boundaries of the marine district, plot<br />
them on charts;<br />
– types of vessels;<br />
– marinas, seasonal competitive events,<br />
tourists circuits;<br />
– small craft movements;<br />
– weather conditions specific to each<br />
season.<br />
• Record boundaries of the marine district<br />
on blank charts.<br />
