Training environment<br />
In the classroom.<br />
CONTENT<br />
1. Factors to be taken into account when<br />
making course choices:<br />
– traffic;<br />
– concentration, nature, and anticipated<br />
movement of ice;<br />
– tides and currents;<br />
– weather conditions.<br />
2. Safe speed:<br />
– for entering ice;<br />
– for maintaining control of ship.<br />
3. Difficult passages and negotiating<br />
manoeuvres.<br />
4. Ice navigating systems, conventional or<br />
polarized radar, as well as SAR and NOAA<br />
imageries, etc.<br />
SUGGESTED METHODS<br />
Methods will be based on available teaching<br />
tools:<br />
a) a videotape on ice conditions in the<br />
marine district, with commentary by the<br />
instructor, could be shown to candidates;<br />
b) an ice condition simulator is being<br />
developed and could be used, when<br />
available;<br />
c) a multimedia document on CD-ROM is<br />
being developed and could also be used,<br />
when available.<br />
