TRAINING OUTLINE
Skill 3 Carrying out emergency manoeuvres specific to Duration: 30 h
the marine district
Module 3
Emergency manoeuvres
Component 2 At the conclusion of training, the candidate will be capable of Duration: 15 h
deciding on emergency manoeuvres.
Training environment
In the classroom and in the simulator:
• for emergency situations such as breakdowns, collisions, groundings, fires, taking on water,
search and rescue operations, shipwrecks, man overboard;
• teamwork;
• on the basis of scenarios provided by the instructor, and passage plans;
• using standardized vocabulary document for communications on the bridge.
CONTENT
1. Reviewing procedures in emergency
situations.
2. Reviewing factors to be taken into account.
3. Safeguarding human life.
4. Possibly devastating effects of an accident
on the environment.
5. Desirable attitudes, such as self-control,
decisiveness, effective management of
human and material resources, coherence in
the various stages of execution, compliance
with procedures.
6. Factors affecting the decision to use a
secondary fairway.
SUGGESTED METHODS
Instructor
• Prepare various scenarios, indicating type of
emergency, type of ship, its position in the
marine district and navigating conditions.
• In simulation, it is possible to create, for
example, navigation scenarios where the
logical and safe manoeuvre is deviation
from course into secondary fairway.
• Record candidates’ exercises while in the
simulator.
• View exercises, evaluate candidates’
behaviour in terms of self-control and
objectivity of decisions.
• Ask candidates to justify decisions. They
should be able to do so on the basis of local
knowledge, ship’s behaviour, and situations
presented in scenarios. This justification
exercise will prepare them for certification
examinations.
• Encourage discussion for the main purpose
of self-criticism and, if necessary, to bring
the group closer together.
